So freaking good!! But that cliffhanger has me!! I need the next book in the trilogy and I need it now! I might almost like this series better than the Illuminae Series by the same authors - but I'm not sure yet. They are both REALLY good! Aurora Burning follows the same squad fresh off the loss of their pilot in book one, Aurora Rising. They now know who the enemy is and that they are the only ones who can stop them and in the process save the galaxy. Not at all a daunting prospect for these young adults. Funny, inventive, and so unique - readers can't help but to fall in love with this quirky cast of oddballs. I won't give more of a summary than that - if you haven't read the first book in the series - DO NOT read this one. Now give me the third book already!

OH MY GAAAAWD, THIS BOOK

I'm really not sure whether the writing worsened astronomically from the first book to the second, or if I was just completely ignorant to its unlikeability while reading Aurora Rising. This sequel was incredibly predictable, full of overused and unnecessary cliches, and contained way too many jokes seemingly targeted at 12-year-old boys, as I don't have a clue who else would find them funny. I also felt like it pushed my suspension of disbelief way too far, what with the complete lack of explanation of the literal magic/superpower stuff in what is presented as a science fiction set only a few hundred years in the future. I doubt I'll continue the series, as this book completely ruined it for me. I really only saved a star for Finian, the only character worth caring about at all.

Quality-wise, I’d say Aurora Burning was definitely on the same level as the first book - a fun, action packed adventure through the galaxy with a cast of characters I’ve grown to love for each of their unique personalities. I loved the jabs at stupid human behaviour (like stopping to smoke two full centuries after first discovering it killed you) and enjoyed every single well-crafted piece of dialogue.

The only thing I’d criticise would once again be that, similar to the first book, there’s a bit of an action-overload. Though I think this definitely varies from reader to reader, I felt a certain predictability at times, as most action sequences follow the same pattern. There’s a goal, then there’s a plan, then they carry out the plan and things go smoothly until everything goes to shit (usually due to the sudden appearance of one of their numerous enemies) right before they can achieve their goal, and they manage to escape by a hair’s breadth. And for some reason Aurora always, always ends up unconscious at the end of those plans lmao. But I have to say that this pattern somewhat lessened after the first half of this book. It got less repetitive, but the plot still went pretty heavy on the action - though it’s very well written, don’t get me wrong. I don’t think the action sequences are boring at all (it IS a galaxy adventure novel after all) I’m just saying that one should be aware there’s a lot of them and things might get a bit tedious if that’s not your cup of tea.

All in all I really enjoyed the book. It’s definitely a page-turner, and like I said - I love the characters! I feel like I know them all very well, and their dynamics are so well crafted, which I think is very difficult to do with that many POVs. The multiple narrators in general are nicely done - all unique voices, all believable, and all important for the story.

The plot had a few mean little twists that I didn’t anticipate, and a few that I did, but it certainly kept me on the edge of my seat! Especially that last chapter! Very excited to see how it all ends!

I liked this book, however this book felt quite juvenile at times, especially with some dialogue. I don’t know if I purely feel this way because my reading tastes are changing or if I just read it at the wrong time. I also thought the romance in this book was a bit cringey at times and I found myself skimming through quite a lot of the book. The best part about this book is definitely the characters which is why I want to continue to read the last book.

4.5 stars (for some scenes that just seemed rushed and off)

I cant even.

I have no chill for this world or cast of characters.

I am emotion and darkness. That is all.
