Once again, this duo has delivered to me everything I wanted. I don’t know why I was so nervous!
Sometimes the only way to win is to break the game.
I still love the cheesiness in this series - the off-the-cuff banter and teasing between crew-mates even in tense situations. It’s something that I think makes or breaks people’s enjoyment of this, but I love it. It’s definitely a YA Space Opera and I adore it!
Learning more about the Eshvaren and the Ra’haam is one of the elements that keeps me super engaged in the plot as well as the characters. The mystery is still not fully fleshed out but I find myself wary when it seems some things are still hidden.
I’m also incredibly satisfied with the way details of each character are delivered as the story progresses. I find myself liking all of these characters more and more! Zila’s backstory in particular was heart wrenching and so is Kal’s. I also am incredibly happy that Kaufman & Kristoff have worked to increase the LGBT+ diversity of this series, which was one minor element I noticed lacking in the Illuminae Files.
There is no shortage of angst where these two authors are involved and the ending has left me nervous for this crew. As the situation becomes far less black and white, I wonder how in the Fold this is all going to resolve itself! I look forward to the next book, absolutely.

I absolutely adore this series. When is the 3rd book getting released?!
3.5 rounded down. Read via Audiobook.
Same complaint as last time. Scarlett talks about her boobs way too much. It's weird, it's unnecessary, it's giving men writing women. Otherwise this is pretty good!

I would have preferred a non-cliffhanger ending, but in all, this was a really solid middle book. It is definately on the re-read list.
This book has so much potential. The premise is good but the way it's executed is so disappointing.
First thing first, why in the hell Aurora likes Kal so much? She was annoyed at him in the first book but when he declared his feelings for her, suddenly she's maddly in love with him? She likes him because he likes her?
I couldn't get into this relationship. They're so cringey and I can't feel any romantic connection between them.
But the more I thought about it the more I realized that it's not only Kal and Aurora's relationship that is absurd, the whole squad 312's relationship doesn't make any sense too. As readers, we are aware of each character's personal issues. But the problem is that we never saw them trusting other members with their secrets and feelings. So their connections felt somewhat superficial and lacking.
Another thing that bothered me greatly is the words Aurora choose to say instead of swearing. She says stuff like son of a biscuit and mothercustard.
I can't stop cringing.
Please make her stop.
I can keep going but the last thing I wanna add is that the story felt very repetitive and predictable. Aurora kept fainting. The squad keep running. No matter the plotlines, the characters always end up somewhat always repeating the way they resolve their conflicts. It mades me feel like the authors ran out of ideas to make it interesting and engaging.
The only reason I'm willing to finish this trilogy is to know what's gonna happen to Tyler and Saedii.
