I am interested in midwifery and this book fascinated me. I loved the different birth stories, especially the ones where husbands were involved, so rare and almost frowned upon at the time. Interesting characters, interesting relationships. I always enjoy stories about whites befriending blacks when it was not the norm to do so.

Main character was on my nerves already.  Read reviews on Goodreads and found that people who disliked or DNF did so around the 5th chapter. They either liked it already or didn't. Since I was searching for reviews at about this same point, I decided that I was already mentally checking out.

A book full of beauty and miracle. Sadness and loss too, yet eventually the triumph of beauty and humanity. I loved this book.

Decent enough story but badly written. The author seems to have a lot of trouble finding her voice and the style is pretty disjointed.

Midwifery scenes beautifully and authentically crafted. The relationships and plot also felt genuine. Loved about 85% of the novel. The historical background was too "stuck in." There was too much of it that interrupted the story. I hate it when authors assume their audience is completely uneducated. You didn't have to give me a definition of who the KKK is and what kinds of atrocities they've committed. Their presence and performance in the novel is enough.

I got absolutely lost in this book, with such believable small W.V. town characters. Very hard to put down and sad that it ended. I'm sure I will go back and read this again.
