Didn't like that Opal was back. She's a dull villain.
Other than that, this was fine.

re-reading this series is like discovering my own villain origin story
you're telling me middle school rachel read one of the best developed relationships of her young life iterate "being hormonal is not akin to being in love" and yall expected me to NOT to become this romance goblin with no patience for leads who don't actually like each other
if i've learned one thing from working in publishing it is that, since it was clear they were trying to set this series up to be the next Percy Jacksonand print money and franchises, Eoin Colfer has Robert Pattinson level "i'm-doing-this-my-way-only-the-weak-fear-death" AUDACITY
again here is what i assume his convos with his publisher looked like;
publisher: eoin please make them a couple please, every franchise has a lead couple
Eoin: [slicing limes] you know what. I'll do something for you. I'll use time travel to age Artemis up and age Holly down so they are both late teens, and in the heat of a very stressful situation they will have a Romantic Momentâ„¢
Publisher: really???? You mean it??? They'll become a couple?
Eoin: no
Publisher: you just said they would have a Romantic Mome-
Eoin: they aren't in love they are just hormonal they even discuss it afterwards
Publisher: what
Eoin: [juicing glasses] this book will be about the intensity of their friendship, and what it looks like to hurt the person who cares about you most for your own gain
Publisher: eoin please - wait did you say person who cares about you most
Eoin: yes
Publisher: so like soulmates
Eoin: [salting glasses] well yes in the previous book I literally wrote "they were as close as two people could ever be"
Publisher: so they are IN LOVE
Eoin: no
Publisher: [weeping openly] eoin I don't understand
Eoin: [pouring shots] you'll need these. we've got two more books after this

Timey-wimey-wibbily-wobbily. Hard to keep up occasionally what with TWO Artemis' running around. I liked the plot device that because of Artemis being a bad person before the fairies(really Holly, Root *sob*, Foaly, and even Mulch) came along, it messed up his life now. However, this was literally jammed filled with eco\save the lemurs!!!!!\global warming\etc. I did not appreciate that. The paradox and the way Eoin Colfer made it all work was brilliant. Holly and Artemis grow ever more best friends. Worth it. I just didn't like how every other sentence pertained to us ruining the earth because of our stupidity. Or something like that, I mostly tried to skim over those sections of the book. And yet, I still liked it enough to give it four stars. Well-played, Mr.Colfer. Well-played.

I did a whole series review which you can check out in my profile under the first novel Artemis Fowl.
What on earth was this junk? I liked the other books in this series, but this was sloppy, cardboard environmentalist propoganda. Don't think I didn't miss the Texas jibe in here, Mr. Colfer. I also think the villain in this poor excuse for a book was a crummy stereotype: an ignorant jerk from the South who hates the planet and wants to kill all animals for fun in the name of religion. I'm not buying it. Badly done, Mr. Colfer. Badly done.
This was fun! There are some things plot-wise that I'm not sure how I feel about, but there are still two books in the series, so it all depends on where we go from here. The characters are definitely the strongest part of this series.
I am not sure I enjoyed this one as much as the earlier books (particularly the last one), but it was still inventive and adorable. Seeing Artemis grow into a teenager, at the same time as he confronts his much more aggressive past tendencies, is quite effective.
As long as we don't talk about the (sorta) romance. Please, Eoin Colfer. Spare us.
