This was a pleasant surprise. I wanted to read this one based on reviews I'd seen and was not disappointed. The characters were well done and the storyline was unique. I found the world building was just the right amount. (not overdone and not too little) I found the writing style easy and fast paced with no lulls in the pacing.
The only thing I am disappointed over is that I picked this up as an indie paperback and not I cannot get the rest of the series in the same format.
I am starting the second book on KU now before it is removed!

Loveddd this book read all night to finish I love the characters and the plot
dark
tense
slow-paced
The multi-species and dual perspectives was fun. Such a slow start but it did end okay. Maybe it was a bit too slow but some parts seemed lacking, just not sure what. Overall fun, let the journey continue!

If you read the first few chapters and thought to yourself “Oh, I know where this is going…” No. No, you don’t.
The tone and overall mood of the opening scenes (where she wakes up and is eventually spotted/detained by the MMC and his lackeys) is so disconnected with the rest of the story that it seemed almost to be from two entirely separate books. Nosferatu to Twilight.
I was almost thrown off completely when the MMC started introducing her to the academy because it didn’t fit the narrative I had been spoon fed (IMO). Even now (I just wrapped up the second book), I don’t know why the setting needed to be in an academy. I think it could have easily been a “historical” fantasy set in castles/kingdoms with the noble high families. Did we even get a clear explanation of the social hierarchy here?
Anyways, it was an entertaining enough read. While I enjoyed the main characters enough, I did have issues with some of the dialogue. Why are we speaking to our professors like we would our friends? And why are these professors and older characters speaking like they’re teenagers?
Decent world building (at least when it came to the history of the dragons and other magic-related elements) with a solid enough plot that at least kept me interested in reading the next one.

Very much a combination of other popular fantasy books, but still enjoyable although a bit slow at times.
Okay so this book definitely is a hodge podge of other books, but it’s juuust unique enough that I could ignore it and get into the story. The story kept me interested enough that I could finish the book, which is actually saying a lot these days. However, I hated the “betrayal” at the end. In fact, a lot of this book was manufactured drama to serve the plot, which I was mostly ok with, but I can only suspend belief so far when it comes to personalities. Like how is Blake already in love with Medra? Why does he think she’s the smartest woman in the world (his words) when seemingly every chapter she does something incredibly stupid that puts someone’s life at risk? I was with her for most of the book, but i think she “not like other girls”ed too close to the sun. She became the typical whiny, childish FMC who’s refuses help that will literally save her life, and I cannot abide that. I don’t know if I’ll be reading the next book, because if she remains stupid it will annoy me.
