I grew up watching Carol Burnett and her variety show when it was in syndication. My cognitively disabled older sister used her camera to take pictures of the TV screen of all the different characters Carol portrayed. As you can imagine with a show that lasted 11 seasons, there were a lot of characters! There were so many skits and sketches that are burned into my memory because they were just so fantastic. In Such Good Company doesn’t cover Carol’s whole life, just the years of the show. The audio version won the Grammy award for Best Spoken Word Album in 2017. Audible recently had a sale and I bought the audiobook.

Highly recommend if you watched The Carol Burnett Show like I did growing up and want some great nostalgic memories.

I really had mixed feelings about this audiobook. I loved that Carol Burnett herself read it, and enjoyed hearing stores of how the show came to be and how it developed over time. On the other hand, the descriptions of specific sketches and lists of famous people she knew became tedious. It did cause me to go back and watch some old shows and introduce them to my kids, but I was kind of glad when the book was done.

If you laughed yourself silly at The Carol Burnett Show, this book is for you. Carol details the show from its inception to its ending. Great anecdotes about stars who appeared on her show and the excellent cast members who came to be part of it through pure serendipity. It is amazing the time, effort, and elbow grease that went into making this show because it could never be done today.

Carol is a true pioneer in comedy and a role model for any woman who aspires to make it in any field. She forged new paths that many comedic actresses and comediennes take for granted. Her work is as groundbreaking as Lucille Ball’s, and I really feel like each woman needs more recognition for their work. Two shining stars who cracked the glass ceiling in their own ways. Isn’t March Women’s History Month? Why aren’t these two ladies touted?

I enjoyed reliving some of the hilarious characters she portrayed, and my only complaint is that you need an accompanying video of every sketch she discusses to fully understand and enjoy it. The book makes me crave watching her show yet again, which you can do on MeTV (yes, I’m middle-aged and watch reruns from the 1970s and 1980s).

I liked it, but I wish it was less of just printing the scripts of sketches, and more behind the scenes stories.

Oh, I loved it. Fun and emotional. The audiobook was so great...between archived interviews and Burnett's narration, it felt like a friend sitting with you and telling you amazing stories.

It was so much fun to read about how Carol Burnett's show came about. I remembered every show she described but she added some details that made me appreciate them even more.
