I just didn’t understand the romance in this book. Within a chapter, Peyton goes from fearing the MMC to being confident he’s a great partner for her. Their beginning as a couple was too fraught for this to really make sense.
Also, why TF wouldn’t they have a second in command take over when a commander is out of commission? That driving force behind a rushed mating was illogical.
The story as a whole had some potential; with biases and tied hands and tragedy.

Spice: 4/5

Triggers: kidnapping, violence, gore, dubcon

3.5 ⭐️’s But it was a downhill journey for me, from brilliant, to average.

So, while I did thoroughly enjoy this, it sadly did not live up to the potential found in its beginnings.

It started out, sooo well.
Intense action, exhilarating tension, beautiful pacing, good dialogue, and cheekily inappropriate humour, that was utterly brilliant in its subtlety and surprise.

Then, we devolved back into cliché SFR, and alien smut.

Our MMC goes from suspicion and derision, to obsessed fascination. It was too fast, too easy.
Our FMC takes longer, and we get to see some journey here, but it’s fairly shallow, with no real character interaction.

Sex scenes became predictable, and lacked sizzle way to quickly.
Basically, it was all too fast.

Further more, the pacing slows, the tension lessens, and the comedy all but disappears.
All the elements that had me charging forward initially.
Did I jinx myself?

Oh man! I was initially so into this book. But once I found out he was going to be unfaithful to his “Fated Mate” it turned me right off. I was so excited for this one.

This was okay.

I am intrigued enough to keep going with the series. Peyton was an enjoyable heroine. The beginning part of the book was the most entertaining and that is because it was more realistic.

Some parts were a little bit far fetched but for the most part, this is a pretty good sci fi series.

4.5 stars
The only reason that this didn't get five stars from me was because I didn't want to immediately reread it when I was done. Even though I had such a hard time ever putting it down when I had to. I absolutely loved the story and the characters were all pretty awesome in their own ways. I laughed often, and smiled so much.

There was absolutely nothing special about Peyton, and I mentioned in another review of mine about how that's what makes a character special to me. She was just a normal girl thrown into a situation that absolutely nobody could have been prepared for. And I think she handled it well. Often the things she said or did were completely relatable and that made her character all the more believable.

Then there's Tahk. Our big bad alien commander. With the sweetest side to him ever and a way with words that could make almost any girl swoon. I know I did. I thought Tahk was absolutely great. He too was very believable for a alien warrior. One that I want so much more of.

Life on Earth went to hell one afternoon in a swift and brutal fashion. These freaky white aliens show up and start eating people while causing complete panic everywhere. Peyton was with her best friend, Viv, at the time it happened and that was probably for the best. Viv's fiance is in the Marines and when he calls to make sure she's okay, he tells Peyton it's not an earthquake and the two of them have to get back to her house no matter what. It's while trying to get there that they first see exactly what's going on when they're witness to these hideous white aliens slaughtering and eating people. They manage to get away with their lives, but it's not long until more of these aliens show up. Fortunately, another group of aliens appear and save them. Only then to proceed and take them to their ship. These new aliens are the Dahk and they're here to save the Earth. Unfortunately, they are not allowed to fight on the ground without the approval of the leaders of the planet. That's where taking these humans come in. They need to be able to communicate after all.

Tahk is commander of the King's army and he's there to do his duty. What he never expected was to find his mate in a human female. At first he is furious, but the more time he spends with Peyton the more he finds himself not wanting to lose her. Peyton is understandably conflicted. When Tahk touched her it started a mating rage in him that only she can calm...by having sex with him. While he's in this rage mind you. Oh, and it also has to be in front of witnesses. She sucks it up and decides to do it in order to save her people and planet. Much like Tahk, she never expected to actually start to care about this vicious alien.

There is tons of Dahk politics going on, but for once it was all quite interesting and not boring. I loved how much power Tahk has in his world as well. Things start looking up when Tahk takes his men and the humans he captured back to Peyton's house to wait for Viv's fiance. With luck he can get in touch with the people who could grant permission. And it turns out, he can. But then humans are just so fucking stupid and self centered that their decisions and actions end up making things so much worse. So much. Things go from bad to worse when there is a major shift in the Dahk world and Tahk has new orders. Orders that go against what Peyton wishes. I was pretty happy with her character all the way up until that very last sentence of the book.
SpoilerI was pretty angry when she says she will never forgive Tahk for leaving Earth. Really?? He's leaving his second in command! Is that not good enough?? He's also a military man that has to obey his king. What part of that does she not understand?? What a selfish stupid brat she was at the end.

I don't so much mind how it ended hanging like that because I already have the next book and will be jumping right in.

Very good

This was a really good read. This is a new author for me and I wasn't disappointed. Can't wait to read the next book in the series!

The ideas behind this story were solid, but the immature writing and dialogue were hard to take.

This book ends on a cliffhanger and stupidity and a bad Romance. There were times I laughed. There are times that this was funny. However, I also found this book infuriating. It made me think about how we idealize male violence. This has very dubious consent in this book. Plus, a lot of petty fighting.

The hero is pretty mean in his thoughts about the heroine when he first meets her. He’s not nice. And he’s very disrespectful. There’s a forced mating thing because otherwise the male will be too violent to think. WTF!? Why is there a thing for women fantasizing about men being so lustful that they can’t contain themselves and will rape the women that they’re interested in? How is that romance?

I found it annoying how the heroine thinks about how she is falling in love with this guy and so much has changed when it’s only been a few days. I also find it very annoying when she doesn’t understand that there’s an emergency and throws a hissy fit at the very end and tears apart his room. It’s so immature and over-the-top and makes no sense for the type of person that she has been to that point. For goodness sake, she was ready to have sex with an alien to save her planet! But also, there is no respect between the two of them.

Basically, it’s not the worst book I’ve ever read but I wouldn’t recommend it.
