The first and most important thing is this: DO NOT BUY THE E-BOOK EDITION. The hardback (and presumably the paperback too) is a stunningly beautiful object, but the e-book is a mess. Avoid at all costs.
I enjoyed this, even though it didn't answer most of the pressing worldbuilding questions (aka, worldbuilding HOLES) I have about this series; such as the issues of the Shadowhunter population and economy. And the hardcover really is beautiful, a work of art with the gorgeous illustrations by a variety of artists. The handwritten 'notes' from Clary, Jace and Simon were great fun, even if they were a total mess in the e-book - they made for a nice dose of comedy when the Codex itself was being a bit dry and serious.
I'm not sure the Codex really adds much to the series, but it was a lovely read and I'm happy to have it on my shelf.

So [b:The Shadowhunter's Codex|13568619|The Shadowhunter's Codex|Cassandra Clare|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1358696072s/13568619.jpg|19147213] is basically the textbook for shadowhunters to read. It reads like a textbook. However it is more interesting than an average textbook than you read for school. Clary, Jace, and Simon both have notes written in it. Sometimes the notes are funny and add a lot to my enjoyment of the book. Let me also say that the illustrations are absolutely beautiful.
Let me point out to you that this book is not a story book as it has all the rules in the shadow world. If you do find something confusing (law) then this book may be able to describe it better for you so it is helpful in that way.

This is a weird book to review since it’s really a book full of information written like it’s for new Shadowhunters.
At times it could be a little bit boring and if you read TMI most of the information won’t be new to you but what made it fun for me was the little notes from Clary, Simon and Jace (and a little bit from Luke & Magnus too) and I also decided to do that myself too. It was really weird to write in a book but it felt like I was part of it a lot more and even chose a Shadowhunters name: Destiny Bluerose

this was fun! i love this world so much and i really appreciate that this book delved deeper into the history and the world building of the Shadow World.
also, i loved Clary, Simon and Jace’s remarks, made me miss the mortal instruments so much
