Hmmm. Found this readable enough. Very vivid imagery and prettily written. It's rare to find such a sweetly captured picture of friendship between two married couples. Not sure at the end, though, where exactly the author wanted to leave me and that undid my enjoyment a bit. Also the whole trip to Italy was a giant boring pointless flop for me. My 4th star was for the writing but I give the story a bleh 3.

Está maravillosamente bien escrito. Pero una de las protagonistas es insufrible y me ha estropeado un poco la historia. Con todo es un gran relato sobre la amistad, el amor y la familia. Recomendable.

Funny what I remembered of this book from when I read it in my thirties -- then, it was a book about hope and new beginnings and the surging joy of new friendships.

Twenty years later, it is the decay and the endings that resonate most with me.

And the very very end of the book. Wow. How could I have forgotten that?

"Yes."

Excellent. The first part of the book does the important work of proving that happiness and love make for interesting reading, even without conflict.

I don’t know why I loved this book as much as I did, but it was tremendous. Easily a favorite of all time.

DID NOT FINISH

I just couldn’t get into it. None of the characters were that like able. It just felt boring.
challenging emotional reflective slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Complicated

Flaws of characters a main focus: No

A slow and rich narrative more than a story really, about life, relationships, forgiveness, loyalty. it's not something you'd read quickly. Take the time to take your time. Beautiful.

3.5 stars rounded down. I feel just a little bad rating what is apparently a classic book with a cultish following only 3 stars. Two young couples - Larry and Sally & Sid and Charity - meet as young professors and their wives during the Great Depression. Their lives become inextricably intertwined in profound and quiet ways. The writing was masterful but the story slow and plodding.

I read this book on trusted recommendations, and while I don’t believe they were wrong I’m not sure they’re right either. It’s well written and sweet, but I often felt the book was unnecessarily wordy, adding filling just because. However all the filling ties together and you understand why it was there.
