Great art. I also liked the rise of the female gangster trio, but their fall was a bit too melodramatic for me.

I'd seen a few commercials for the new movie The Kitchen about a group of mobster's wives who take over the business while their husbands are in jail. It's set in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of New York in the late 1970's. I read an article about the movie that mentioned that it was based on a comic series and that piqued my interest. Lucky for me, my library had a copy. It's 8 issues collected in one book

The initial premise of the comic series is the same as the movie but I have no idea whether the two stories play out the same. I'll have to check out whether the movie is fairly similar to the comics or not.

It's about mobsters so I wasn't surprised to find it full of violence and language that's similar to a Sopranos episode. It took me a bit to figure out the relationships between the women and their significant others. There are some things that I thought were rather predictable and other times I was rather surprised at the direction Masters took the plot.

It was well done but as I said, very violent. I'm glad I read it. It's hard to use the word good because there really isn't a good character to be found.

The artwork by Ming Doyle and Jordie Bellaire is both detailed and rough. The feel of the urban 70's landscape is well done.

I read this because I loved the movie trailer so much, heard the movie was based on a graphic novel, and I insist on reading the book first whenever possible. Haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm excited to see how closely the film writers followed the book's storyline. It's a quick read, but riveting.

Not bad. I liked the art. The story was compelling and interesting enough.

This was a mostly entertaining mafia stories set in the 1970s which give it style but not a lot of substance. The gimmick is interesting in that the leads are gangsters and women (what a radical concept - which has never been done before! Note my sarcasm!) but the story is pretty conventional. The book is actually too short too really invest in any of the characters.

I liked the art but none of the characters felt real - having three leads was probably a mistake as it split the focus too much. And despite the tagline this doesn't really explore the gender dynamics of women running a mafia operations. It gets a mention in the beginning but it doesn't really matter. It's a gimmick more than anything.

On the plus side I liked the style and the character design. Having women leads allow for much more fun fashion on the page. Yes I am being superficial but I take victories where I can get them. An enjoyable read which could have been benefit from a longer length and some innovation in the plot.

Would have benefitted from a long run to allow more character development. Made the end feel shallow. Still a really interesting story.

I read this because I'm looking forward to the screen adaptation, which I think I'll like based on the story.

Solid crime story, but feels a bit rushed and not quite as fleshed out as it could be. Still definitely worth a read.
