I actually finished reading this collection of short stories two days ago already, but I wanted to leave me some time to gather my thoughts.

Also, it’s a short book that I could have finished in just a few days, but I took my time because I was enjoying it so much I wanted to stay longer with this book.

It was my first reading from Truman Capote, and it was a really pleasant surprise. I was hooked from the first story “A Christmas Memory”, I also loved “One Christmas”. I liked “The Thanksgiving Vsitor” and “Jug of Silver”. I only didn’t really get “Master Mystery”.

I enjoyed the writing and the fact that it is kind of a non-fiction semi-autobiographical book, I liked the nostalgia in the writing, it’s sometimes made me feel like I was there with the young Truman, and the two Christmasy short stories felt like a hug, especially when reading them around Christmas time.

I’m really glad I finally read one of his books and I definitely want to read more.

I haven’t read a story as delightfully charming as this since Anne of Green Gables. What a gem of a read, charming, beautiful & unique. I hope to re-read this every Christmasb

Three genuine, poignant little semi-autobiographical pieces about his childhood among eccentric country relatives in Alabama. Not at all predictable, and with frequent little turns of phrase that stick with you.

So beautiful written, truly capable of make you invested in this sad and emotional story, even being so short.

“It’s fruitcake weather! Fetch our buggy”.

I only thought to read these short stories because I heard Ann Patchett talk about how “A Christmas Memory” makes her cry every time she reads it. What a precious grouping of short stories. I loved “A Christmas Memory”. I wasn’t sure what to expect but the fact that these are true stories from Truman Capote’s childhood in Alabama make them all the more endearing.

What a little gem of a book! Sweet and sad, just like much of life is.
