Thrilling, exciting, but also a warning to us as humans. I ate this book up and when I wasn't reading it I was thinking about it. It had me on the edge of my seat totally in its grip. I love that the science in it is real and very close to home. If you love Jurassic park you'll love this too, even though there's no dinos. It's maybe a tiny bit predictable in who will or won't die but I don't think that takes away from the quality. It's well written and gritty. I liked the cast and really appreciated the representation of women in police/SWAT/army.

Slow to start, but give it a chance. Once it starts going, it snowballs until the very end. Jurassic Park with a twist that will leave it standing on its own.

Similar to Jurassic Park, even the book pokes at that.

An exciting fast paced science inspired thriller that was entertaining, but wasn't really able to surprise me. I also didn't love the pretty heavy handed references to jurassic park and his own novels.

A simple review:

This is like a 3.7 rounded up to a 4, because the main threat is a little corny but still has wow factor. It’s still really interesting to think about - how far will humans go to play god? What is ethical in the name of science? Douglas Preston sets a really beautiful stage. The main character has to deal with an idiot for a manager, I think a lot of people can relate to that. It was a fun read and enjoyed sharing it with friends.

I've read the Gideon Crew series, and I've started the Pendergast series. Since I enjoy both of those, I thought I'd give this one a try, and it was fun adventure. It had interesting characters, an interesting plot, and plenty of danger. Book 2 has been added to my waitlist.

Personally, I found some of the characters to be written in a two dimensional manner - the easy tropes of a pre stamped character - and I found the ending unsatisfying. Overall, an easy read but not a repeat.
