A “happily married couple” who moves from the city to the countryside- at his request. Drew's intention for the move is anything but pure, and his “clueless” wife, Fern, goes along with his suggestion, finding themselves a beautiful seaside house in a sleepy village. Quickly, the reader finds out Drew’s true intentions for wanting to move to this remote town, and it’s bad news for Fern.
As a newlywed, this book terrified me. I kept questioning how a marriage could get to this point! The amount of infidelity, deception, and vengeance in this domestic thriller was mind-blowing. I enjoyed the dual POV, swapping between Fern and Drew. It quickly became clear that they truly don't know one another. The ending surprised me, and the epilogue nicely wrapped up the book and left the reader with the feeling that the "bad guy" in this book was not as smart as they believed they were and that they might not get away with it.
As a medical professional, I was entirely appalled at Dr. Drew not sending off the bloodwork he drew on a patient – it literally made my jaw drop. Then when I got toward the end of the book, it all made sense.
Overall, this was a very enjoyable read; I enjoyed the twists throughout this book and would recommend it!
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this eARC!

This was the first book I read from Daniel Hurst, and it won't be my last. (I've already put several on my TBR list. His 20 Minute Series sounds intriguing.)
While somewhat predictable, and at times a bit cliche, The Doctor's Wife was still an enjoyable read. Hurst writes well, and keeps you involved and turning pages.
The characters are well-developed, though none are exactly good humans. And that's ok. Let's face it, the world is full of less than moral people. Books that have nothing but do-gooders, rainbows, and unicorns tend to be unrealistic. It's fun to read stories with relatable, thought less than desirable characters.
Thank you to Bookouture, Daniel Hurst, and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review. Publication date is January 31, 2023. If you want a well-written domestic thriller, give The Doctor's Wife a spin.

This is my first book by Daniel Hurst and it was quite the thriller! It is definitely a slow burn and filled a couple of twists. Personally, I struggled as a reader to get fully into the story. The longer chapters made the burn feel slower for me. However, towards the end, it picked up in pace and the epilogue solidified the thrilling part to this book.
I would recommend this for: new to the thriller genre, family drama, slow burn

We've got another husband and wife story with secrets and betrayal and this one follows Fern & Drew.
Although Fern wasn't particularly likable I was happy that she wasn't a naive wife and had her own tricks up her sleeve. I did feel bad for her when Drew was saying how much he cared for Alice. He comes off as sleazy as he's supposed to.
This one was super fast paced and kept me engaged. You pretty much know what's going to happen from the prologue, which gives a lot away. I still did not see the twist coming though, but figured it out after the wink. I do like how that all played out. Nice epilogue too!
Narration notes:
Sarah did an alright job, didn't love her male voice, but was able to listen to her at 2.5x. David did an alright job too, but I had to slow him down to 2x for his chapters.

This book was just a "meh" book. Dull and soft thrills. The plot is great, and the author did a great job of describing the husband's thought processes as narcissistic and patronizing without him realizing it. I really love the ending and lack of accountability, even though so many people may not. But, for the most part, it feels like the author was trying too hard. For example, the author overexplained details from the character's POV that would have been much more satisfying and mysterious if left out. The "twists" felt more like slight curves instead of sucker punches of shock. It could have been written in a more thrilling way and emphasized the scheming and teaming of the characters. As an audiobook, it was narrated extremely slowly, as is usual for a British narrator. I had to place the speed at 1.75. There were parts of the novel where the narrator took a breath mid-sentence which felt abrupt and interrupting.

Hands down Bookouture has the BEST mystery/thriller Author’s around. I’ll now be immediately adding Daniel Hurst’s catalogue to my TBR after reading The Doctor’s Wife.
What I liked most about this book was the dual POV and alternating timeline. It allows the reader to have a more immersive reading experience, and helps to show more than flat out tell.
Ironically, what I liked least, I also loved, and that was on how much I disliked the two main characters. They were both so petty and cunning that I enjoyed every minute!

The Doctor's Wife is an extremely fast-paced popcorn thriller and works best when you know as little as possible about the plot.
The story is told in alternative timelines between Drew and his wife, Fern. I enjoyed this format as we understand how and why things unfolded as they did. While I found neither Fern nor Drew likable characters, I loved waiting for karma to come for them. The author did a great job of building suspense and tension. I devoured this book in almost one sitting.
I listened to the audiobook. Both narrators did a fantastic job and added a special touch in bringing this story to life.
With this being a thriller, I felt this was sometimes a bit predictable. However, I still enjoyed the reading journey, so I rounded my 3.5 stars to 4.

“The Doctor’s Wife” is the first novel by Daniel Hurst that I have read. It will not be my last! He clearly knows how to write a fast paced and intriguing thriller.
Right off the bat, our story starts with the “appearance of a body in an unexpected place.” We know as soon as we start the book what will happen. What we do not know are the events that will lead up to this event, nor do we know why. The readers already know what will happen in this book, so I am not sure why the author chose to reveal this so early on. Personally, I would have rather it not even been included.
Our story is told from alternating points of view of Drew and his wife, Fern. The couple had just relocated from bustling city of Manchester to a quiet village of Aberness, near the Great Britain and Scotland border. Drew promised that he would feel less stressed working as a doctor in a smaller setting and would have more time to spend with his wife. Despite how beautiful their new house and village will be, Fern is a “city girl” but has to go along with the move.
On the outside, Drew and Fern would seem to be a perfect couple. Drew is arrogant, loving to refer to himself as DOCTOR Drew Devlin. Fern loves that he is a doctor, not only for his paycheck, but also for the convenience of having a doctor at hand. Drew may think that his wife is a pushover, and doesn’t know his TRUE reason for wanting to move to Aberness, but it is clear he underestimates her.
I do not want to reveal too much more of the plot to say that this author has done an excellent job of writing characters who are NOT likable at all. They are very much unreliable narrators but in a good way! It adds to the thrilling part of this psychological thriller and helps to drive the pace along. I definitely will be reading more of Daniel Hurst’s books soon if they are as fast paced, twisty, and thrilling as this one! I also must say that I loved the two narrators. Having the right voice actors can make or break a book, and this book has two excellent ones.
Thank you NetGalley, Daniel Hurst, and Bookouture Audio for an advanced copy of this audiobook in exchange for my honest opinion.
