Probably would've given it a two-star if Marvel didn't treat this volume like a throw-away volume --- mixing 2 issues of random issues from a mini-event. There are no flows or logic to the way the collection was made.

Despite having one piece of a mediocre crossover in the middle (Black Vortex) the rest of it isn’t bad. The Jean/Emma issue it starts with is good, and the two issue arc with some mutant refugees living in the ruins of Utopia was fine as well.

2021 Summer (July);
Reread of Baby!Jean Arc

Most of these were read in a blur of summer bliss in a hammock in a backyard garden as I finally followed up on my original reads of the baby!Jean storyline that I'd gotten half into before falling out of again. I really do continue to love this storyline mostly for her.

There's not a lot to this volume. Five somewhat related issues that show the sereis petering out. The art is varied, but strong, but the stories are all over the place, from the Jean Grey training issue to the Black Vortex crossover issue to Jean Grey outs Iceman to himself to The All New X-Men sort of rescue a bunch of mutants that writers seem to have left behind on Utopa. It's mostly an uninspiring treading of water before the series relaunches.

I recommend it for completists and for people who enjoy the queering of a character for no reason or stakes (though this will be an interesting development in future issues). I'm not putting it in my LGBTQ+ category because the queerness affects nothing in the story and is, in this volume, completely arbitrary.

Horribly uneven. With art that ranges from bad to okay. The Emma Frost training Jean Grey by dumping her in Majipoor and setting her up to fight The Blob was an interesting idea, with odd art. The in space stuff with the Guardians of the Galaxy was just plain incoherent crap and yet contained some nice touches. And then back on Earth the art is uneven but the story is great. Sure it would be nice if the stuff with Angel's latest changes made sense. And if I completely bought the relationship between Laura and Angel, but still that feels minor. This version of Jean Grey continues to be the best I've seen written - an interesting actual person with needs and emotions and flaws. And the new X-Men as a group work. Even Magyk seems to make sense in this book. So umm 3.5 of 5.

+++issue one is 5/5, love this Jean and Emma friendship and banter. Well executed and fun to see how it plays out
-black vortex is...fine. Super disjointed though and the low part of this Volume
+kiddos back to earth yay.
++interesting revelations that are well put together about s certain teammate that didn't seem so forced and tackled respectfully
??warren and Laura...not sure on that one yet
+shield vs X-Men which turns to X-Men vs X-Men ends up being simple but cool
+nice poignant speech at the end
-no enticing build up to something coming

2.5 stars | Not really sure what the hell this volume was about? Someone please tell me if I missed something, but I felt like none of the issues were connected and it was just confusing... Also Maria Hill looked like a child (and that really bothered me for some unknown reason).
