Underneath the Sycamore Tree is a nice interpretation of what life with lupus can be like for a young woman. While the symptoms are not accurate, the feelings of isolation and interactions with others are spot on. The unusual relationship between Em and her step brother makes this sad novel unique and can be exclusionary for some readers. The author does a wonderful job conveying Emery and Kaiden's emotions, the other characters all fall flat.

I haven't cried this hard since my yeast infection

I've never felt this way about a book before and to be frank, I don't even know what I'm feeling but this book made my heart hurt. I enjoyed every moment every page every word of this book. I need to go recover goodbye now.

I bought this book on the pretty cover and description alone. I had heard nothing about it. It will probably go down as one of the best books I’ve read this year. I loved it!

This one was sad and I knew it was coming.

5 heartbreaking stars

I went in mostly blind to this book the only thing I knew about it was that it was emotional and that the FMC was sick
And let me tell you, my god did this book have my sobbing, clutching my chest in pain for Emery

Emery oh my sweet sweet girl this girl deserved the world except the world had been so shitty to her, she is the epitome of strength.
Emerys relationship with kaiden will live rent free in my head their love for each other was beautiful and not just in a romantic way their friendship was everything and more both needed each other, kaiden was strength and protection Emery needed and Emery was the soft, empathetic person kaiden needed.
To me these 2 were soulmates both romantically and in friendship!

Now im not going to give much away because I don’t want to take away the experience of feeling the book in all its rawness!
It will break you, make you question if you can keep going, make you laugh, make you mad but it will also teach you… it will teach you that life can be cruel but also life is what you make of it, life is a journey of highs and lows and that people will come into your life when you need it most, even when you don’t know you need it!
This book also opens your eyes to how painful illness and hidden illnesses can be on not just the patient but everyone around them.
If you’re ok with emotional reads, tough topics and not having a traditional happy ending (but to me the epilogue was a beautiful closer) then you NEED to read this! I will honestly never forget this book it’s taken a piece of heart!

Few notes on side characters

Emerys grandmother…. I adore that woman!

Emerys mother… Im sad yet totally pissed at her, I mean my heart aches for her losing one child is unimaginable and having another sick is a whole other level but some of her actions were unforgivable and I was angry for Emery over how she was treated!

Emerys Dad… I was so angry at him at the beginning but by the end my heart was shattered, he deserved more time!!!

Cam (kaiden’s mum)…. Oh she stole my heart my heart hurt for her over her pain with kaiden. And i absolutely adored her love for Emery she was the mother she needed when her own mother couldn’t do it!

DID NOT FINISH: 26%

-I have no words IM CRUSHED
-Reminds me of "If he had been with me." But in a different troupe.
-I think this is one of the books I've cried the most too...
-It's realistic, raw, and honest.
-The Epilogue & Dedication had me sobbing
-Fav Quotes:
-“Disease is the monster in the dark. It lingers, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. It veers its ugly head and takes what it wants, when it wants.
Yet, there’s one disease that is worse than any kind of invisible illness in existence and it is something the world is plagued with.
Indifference.
-“I find that the books with the saddest endings are the best because they make us feel. We don’t always get a happily ever after no matter how hard we work for it.”
-"We're Human"
