I liked this enough to go look up the author's catalogue and buy a few more reads. Good angst. Lovely angst. Characters were very real--frustrating in a lot of ways before they figured themselves out, which is great!

I chose this book for my June Amazon First Reads and enjoyed most of it. Although the two main characters have had terrible things happen to themselves and people they love, it was mostly an uplifting sweet novel. Emery Rose is raising an almost 6 year old daughter Reese, but lost her hotel job and is hanging on barely with help from her neighbor. Oliver is a famous musician whose twin brother Alex died in a car accident. Fans blame Oliver for Alex's death, despite how it happened was another driver.

Emery saves Oliver from being tabloid fodder and he thanks her by hiring her as his personal chef. They start connecting as friends first. We learn that Emery hasn't seen her sister Sammie in years and is worried about her. Emery's parents are a** holes, quite honestly and it's surprising how she turned out despite them and her strict upbringing. Oliver's previous girlfriend, Cam is a total bitch. When Emery's parents threaten her custody of Reese, I was cringing. I had a hunch as to the reason her mother and father treated her, and how it relates to her sister. TW for sexual assault and substance abuse.

I felt like the book wrapped up too abruptly. What happened to the video the paparazzi got of Cam showing her true colors? Did Emery deal with the reveal about her parents? It was a huge bomb. Then a HEA. This book had some good moments and I like how Cherry tied music into healing. Would I have read this book if it weren't free? Maybe, maybe not.

My first read by Cherry and definitely not my last! This book had it ALL!!!! A broken hero suffering from some extremely crippling mental health issues, a heroine single mom, side characters that you wished were in your circle and some who you wished you could remove from the earth *cough* Emery’s parents *cough*.

The slow burn of this romance was worth the wait! It was perfectly timed for the way the MC’s relationship was evolving and even though there were minimal bedroom scenes, you barely noticed!

This book was heavy on the emotional aspect and had me tore up more times than not.

I don’t usually enjoy young children with dialogue in romance books, but Reese was written exquisitely and had me laughing out loud so many times! The dynamic between her and Oliver was the best sparing ever! Warmed my heart and made me laugh!

This book was an easy 5 star rating for me. It encompassed everything I love about contemporary romance books!

How tragic to lose your twin in an accident. Tragic also that he was the more "outgoing" one in your musical duo and now everybody sort of expects you to fail. And the only way you can cope is to get completely smashed. On a particularly bad bender, Emery knows you need help, so she brings a very drunk (and beat up) you to her place to sleep it off. It's a good thing she knew your story because first impression was NOT good, lol.

Anyway, after Oliver finds out Emery got fired for helping him, he offers her a job. It's sort of her dream to be a chef, so cooking for him is her dream job, even if she has to deal with his bitch of a girlfriend. Over time, Oliver realizes Emery sort of calms something in him and having her around is good for him, beyond the cooking. And he kicks bitch girlfriend to the curb.

Along with all of this, Emery has other issues. Her parents are horrible and controlling, and after the bitch ex girlfriend leaks some false information, her parents try to take her daughter. It's a whole, big thing.

Anyway, of course things work out in the end. It was sweet to watch Oliver get better under Emery's care, and it was sweet also to watch their romance blossom.

Lovable characters, good story, and overall a nice beach read. Unfortunately the incongruity of voice, especially in the adult-content scenes, paired with several grammatical errors, kept my inner editor from being able to relax and enjoy the book as much as I wanted to. It was good, not great.

he best Prime First Read of 2021! Raising a daughter alone is both pleasure and pain for Emery. Oliver drinks his grief away and misses his twin brother madly. They share their paths of loss while remembering the key to breathing is music. Romance + Healing x Hope ÷ Music = a 5-star novel! ~LiteraryMarie

Trigger warnings for substance abuse, verbal abuse, depression, and rape.

Because of some of the subject matter, parts of it were hard to read. I struggled with the writing style itself at times but the story kept my attention. It was heartbreaking and sweet.

I wanted to like this one. And I did like elements. However, the main characters were way to Mary Sue and Marty Stu, even though they were supposedly broken. The bad characters had no nuance, they were just over the top bad people. Finally, things just clicked way to easily into place given the realities being painted. Sigh.

Fun, engaging, entertaining read

I came to a point in this book that I knew what would happen, and I didn’t care. It wasn’t that it was predictable, more that it was a forgone conclusion, but it still worked in the story and with the narrative I think the author was going for. Also I kind of struggle finishing e-books but I couldn’t put it down. Loved it!
