I've missed Eve and Roarke, but just like family you haven't seen in a while; you pick up right where you left off.
This series is an emotional must for me. It has amazing character development and a unique world that has started becoming more of a reality than futuristic. I figured out who'd done it and why a lot sooner than Eve did; so I always get a little let down when that happens. Otherwise this would have been a solid 4 stars.
The narrator was actually pretty good. Wasn't sure how'd I feel about a woman reading Roarke but I didn't even really notice.

I always enjoy these more in spite of the characters and plot than because of them. This time I knew WAAAAAY early on who done it, but Eve was being really stupid about people--not that she doesn't do that--perhaps because of it being Christmastime. The narrator of this was absolutely terrific, though! It's amazing the difference that can make in 'reading' a story.
Yeah, it's formulaic...but it's still a fun series!
It's harder to be invested in finding a killer when you really just can't stand the victim. Which is quite the point of this case. Eve will stand for the dead, no matter how much of an asshole he is. And the suspects are sympathetic, except one who doesn't really seem to get what they deserve.
For me, this time, I was more absorbed in the personal life part of the story than the case. I found myself wishing she'd just wrap it all up so we could move on to the Christmas party and all the festivities afterward. I wanted to read about her hanging out with Peabody and McNab just chit chatting and having some dinner.
These characters have become so familiar to me that I don't even really need a story. I can just read about what they're doing. But in my opinion the case seemed to unnecessarily drag on and I was ready for it to wrap up. She consults with far too many friends who are 'experts' in their fields. Even Mira, this time, felt kind of unnecessary to me because the victim seemed to apparent. But it is what it is.

Eve/Roarke Christmases are the best, seriously. I always rock a big, goofy grin straight through the gift-giving scenes.
I love this series and this one did not disappoint. I like how the characters and their relationships evolve. The solution to the mystery kept me guessing. Very enjoyable!

Another fun installment in one of my top three favourite series' ever!
This time out, Eve lives through Christmas, and all its attendant - to her - horrors. The murder she gets handed, by another of Eve's [sort of] horrors, Trina is nothing, absolutely nothing, compared to dealing with holiday cheer, parties, decorations, and, worst of all - shopping! The NYPSD's top murder cop can deal with almost anything, but Christmas shopping nearly puts her over the top, and it is one of the funniest scenes in the story. There's always at least one scene in every one of these books that makes me howl with laughter. In this installment, it's Eve doing holiday shopping and then telling Roarke about it after is the one in this book.
At this point, it's getting pretty hard to find new things to say about this series. I love it, it never gets old for me, and that's because the characters - whom I adore - grow and develop with each new book. They feel real to me, they are multi-dimensional, and they have foibles, which just makes them that much more lovable to me. I truly can't get enough of them, and visiting their world is a happy, entertaining, comforting experience every time.
Nora Roberts knows how to write great characters in interesting stories, and this series where she writes as J.D. Robb is no exception. She knows how to draw the reader in, give them plenty to engross them, and keep them coming back for more. The In Death series delivers, and I will keep reading them as long as she is willing to write them!

This is reread but in audibook. One of my favourite books in the series, easily in my top 10. As per from book 1, this book is narrated by Susan Eriksen and she did a great job as usual. I find myself wanting to strangle Eve at times and I write that with much affection. She kept harping about Summerset having a stick up his arse but really, I think she has a stick up her arse too. She can be tad black and white at times, it always Roarke (ahhh, I want to marry him, I really do) who makes her see shades of grey. Speaking of Roarke, every book made me fall so deeply in enamored with him. He is so perfect and oh-so-swoony. Anyway, can someone draw me Roarke and Eve gargantuan mansion? I have a vivid imagination but even I cannot fathom how humongous their mansion could be.
I want this series never to end.
