Thank you to H. Hunting and her team for the advance reader copy of Bitter Sweet Heart, the second story in the Lies, Hearts and Truths series.
My excitement for this book is unreal! I loved our first Pucked second-generation story, Little Lies. I am ecstatic that Helena is giving us another Waters child and a teacher-student romance!
I am a member of Helena Hunting’s review team, but I remain honest and genuine in my reviews.

”I feel seen. Whole. Like nothing matters but you and me.”
This story honestly took me by surprise in the best way. It’s intriguing, steamy, and funny, but also has depth and scenes that bring out your emotions. This is part of a spin off series, but can be read as a standalone. Bitter Sweet Heart is a dual first person POV book about Maverick, a college hockey player, and Clover, a college professor- specifically Mav’s new professor.
Maverick’s personality is what shocked me the most, but something I loved the most. He was kind, considerate, thoughtful, introspective, and an all around amazing human for being a young adult. He’s very mature and it makes you see how well he fits with Clover because of it. Clover is at a point where she is finding herself and cannot fathom her feelings for Mav, but is drawn to the caring student anyway. They are both at pivotal points in their lives and seek solace in each other.
“You feel permanent. Like you’re inside my heart and my soul, and I want to keep that. This is the most grounded I’ve ever felt in my life.”
Clearly this book has a major forbidden element with Clover being Maverick’s professor and several years older than him. What I liked about it most was that Helena actually didn’t make the forbidden aspect a reason for the two wanting each other. Although I wouldn’t have cared if she did, she added way more emotion and real life to the story that had more than just their forbidden situation which I loved.
I have read a decent amount of Helena’s books, including the Pucked and All In series that this new series is a spin off of. It has been exciting to see the development of her writing style, plots, and overall character personalities throughout these books. Even with her success, she continues to better her books and I will continue to read everything I can from her.
“How did you become exactly the person I need?”… I don’t know, but I’ll love you for as long as you want me.”
Overall, this is what Hunting does best: a sweet, funny, and steamy story, but she added deeper characters and realistic emotions to really make you fall in love. Mav and Clover’s storyline has plenty of twists and turns to hold your attention. If you read Little Lies (or even if you didn’t), you will without a doubt enjoy this one.

I was a bit hesitant to read this since I am not a fan of teacher/student stories, but this one was done so well. The story follows Maverick, who we are introduced to in Lavender's book. I loved following this story and learning more about Maverick and Clover. I can't wait for BJ's story to come out.
This series so far has been everything!! Helena has brought her usual writing style and so much more to make a great mix of chemistry filled books with great characters, that can be super relatable and all the feels. Maverick and Clover’s story is the perfect combination of all those things. This series truly keeps getting better and better by the book and I can’t wait to see where it goes with BJ’s book!
Oh Maverick…I just want to give the man the world’s biggest hug after reading this book! I absolutely loved him. He loves fiercely, he puts the needs of everyone else above his own, but there is so much more to Maverick than what you see on the outside. Clover, she has been through a lot but she is stronger than she thinks. I absolutely love her.
The chemistry between Mav and Clover is instant. These two instantly bonded on a much deeper level. I loved everything about their relationship and the bond they formed with each other. They are strong individually, but together they are even stronger and I love the support and comfort that they both give each other.
The further and further I got into this story and the more I learned about Mav and Clover I just fell more and more in love. I didn’t want their story to end. There is just something so deep and beautiful about their story that sticks with you.
It is great to get more of the Waters family, plus the rest of the extended family. I can’t wait to return back to this world.
If you’re looking for a forbidden, student/teacher, age gap, sports romance this is one to check out.

One of my favorite things about this series is that we get to see my favorite character’s children all grown up. Maverick is a wonder combination of Violet and Alex. In his relationship with Clover shows us that he is little cocky but is also wonderfully compassionate and kind. Their love might be forbidden but they bring out the best in each other. There is definitely angst, but the pay off is worth it. I can’t wait for BJ’s story
Is it bad that my favorite parts of this book weren’t about either of the main characters? I was excited to get Maverick’s story, but definitely went in skeptical about the premise. Unfortunately, I wasn’t really won over. I’ll probably still read the rest of the series because I like this universe but honestly, I’m starting to lose interest after how little of the other characters we got in this book compared to the first. The next gen family energy was a large part of my drive to read this so I was disappointed it wasn’t really present here.

“You’re my favorite fucking person, you know that?”
The story was cute and I liked both Clover and Maverick but the writing wasn’t my cup of tea. I usually enjoy reverse age gap but I feel like something was missing in this one.
Maverick’s story was sad. Too much guilt, too many responsibilities. He was in pain for years and no one noticed until Clover. I liked their chemistry and connection.
“I might have been the hand that pulled him up from the darkness, but Maverick is the light. And I get to watch him shine every day.”
Something I loved about this book was a Kody and Lavender’s crumbs. I missed them.
