A son of a hockey legend and an NHL prospect himself, Maverick seems to have a charmed life. All he has to do is make it through his senior year. That's exactly what he plans to do. Then, he realizes that his recent one-night stand is his professor—just one more complication to deal with in his not-so-charmed life.

Oh, Maverick! 💔 From Little Lies, we knew there was so much more to your story. We only saw glimpses of your complexity and what makes you such a great man and brother. But now we know! And, your struggles … we had no idea that you were hiding the fact that you carry the weight of the world on your shoulders behind your jokes and beautiful smile. You are such a selfless protector.

I’m so glad Clover floated into your life. On paper, the two of you appear to have nothing in common. Yet, you are perfect for each other. Only she could give you all the love and understanding you so deserve and be your catalyst for healing.

I didn’t think Little Lies could be topped. However, like Little Lies, Bitter Sweet Heart has instantly become one of my all-time favorites. This incredible, moving story will stay with me for a long time. To say I loved Bitter Sweet Heart is an understatement!

ARC kindly received for an honest review.

I love the hockey world that Helena has created. It's interesting getting to know the kids of the Pucked world, and sometimes I need to remind myself that my favourite characters re now older than I'm picturing them lol.

Maverick and Clover have an interesting relationship, and its definitely on the more serious side topic wise - the whole of the book, and the things they deal with, I mean.

They were likeable characters and I liked how thing played out in the end and certain moves they made for their future - quite fitting given how their story played out.

Would recommend, and look forward to more from this series.

Maverick, Maverick, Maverick ! My heart broke for him through the entire book — he holds so much pressure on himself to be everything everyone else needs of him. He is absolute perfection — a perfect blend of Alex and Vi. He’s an absolute gentleman in the streets, and you know what I’m the sheets (thank you Waters curse), IYKYK. Clover is a great leading lady as well. She’s going through a pretty rough time and really struggles with the dynamics of their relationship that creates many complications. She also knows that Maverick is someone she can’t let go of. She sees him, listens to him, and encourages him in the most lovingly supportive way.

Note: This review is for an ARC and is my unbiased opinion.

I'm super tired writing this review because I stayed up super late to finish this book. I didn't want to stop reading. I was too invested in how Maverick and Clover's story was going to end. I'm hoping that this review will still make sense despite all that. At least that tells you I enjoyed reading this book. So, here we go.

I was excited for this book because I was wondering what Maverick was up to when I read Little Lies. Lavendar's big brother was getting into some trouble with his professor... That makes this book a little taboo. Maverick and Clover were both very aware of the rules surrounding their professional relationship, and (thankfully) made sure they weren't crossing boundaries that would ruin their lives. I appreciated that because this is not a trope I'm a fan of. It worked for me in their situation.

Maverick was a caretaker. He took care of everyone in his life from his siblings to his friends to Clover. Sometimes that was good. Other times it drained him. Everything weighed heavily on Maverick. I loved seeing how he dealt with it all. He grew a lot and in the best ways. I also loved how Clover fit into that. Their relationship challenged him. He was respectful of her and maybe over cautious at times, but his maturity matched hers even with the eight year age difference between them.

Clover is a woman trying to move on from a marriage she felt trapped in. I won't go into it more than that because I don't want to spoil anything, but she has some healing to do herself. I appreciated the way she thought through her potential relationship with Maverick. I was a little worried I wouldn't like her, but I don't know why. She was sweet and, despite being a little unexpected, her relationship with Maverick made sense. They were a great match.

One of the bonus fun/cool things about this book was getting to see some favorite characters again. There were some great moments with Maverick and his parents. I also loved the times when Maverick was supporting Lavendar and Kody. If you haven't read Little Lies I would recommend reading that first because you will want to be up on all the stuff from that book.

So, yeah. Maverick's book didn't disappoint. I love his character more now than I did before I started and that's saying something. I also loved Clover and the dynamics of their relationship. I'm hoping we continue to get more books for this generation.

Thank you to Social Butterfly PR for sending me an e-ARC of this book to read and review. Oh my goodness I loved Maverick and Clover so much. I'm not usually one for age-gap romance, But this wasn't a large age gap and I thought it worked really really well. It was smart, snappy, and certainly sexy and spicy. I would definitely be swooning over Mav and I don't blame Clover at ALL. I loved the emotions, the family vibes and the healing and growth that each person had throughout the story. I also enjoyed the whole figuring out what you want out of life deal. It was really important to acknowledge the mental health factors and the weight we feel we need to carry all by ourselves. I loved loved loved this book and would definitely read more stories from this world!

I've been waiting for Maverick's story for two years since Lavender's story in Little Lies. Maverick is Lavender's older brother, son of Alex and Violet Waters (from the Pucked series). Alex is a former NHL superstar and Maverick has been trying to live up to his father's reputation. He has an NHL prospect after his last year of college, but he's really not too sure what he wants to do.

Maverick is an old soul at twenty-one years old. He's been carrying around a lot of guilt and anxiety over what happened with Lavender's kidnapping many years ago. Add to that his worry about his future career and he has a lot on his shoulders. When he meets Clover the summer before classes start, there is instant chemistry and a hookup. Who knew they would meet again and that she would be his professor?

I loved the chemistry between Clover and Maverick. While he was her student, they both struggled to do the right thing. (They did.) Plus, Maverick was so sweet and gentle with her, always asking her for permission before making moves in their physical relationship.

This is an emotional, beautiful, age-gap romance between two broken people. Clover has a lot to deal with in her life, too. They both come into their lives at the right time.

Seeing so much of Maverick's parents was an added bonus. The talks Maverick had with his father at the end of the story was so wonderful and supportive. Violet's verbal diarrhea is always fun, too.

Thank you to the author for an advanced readers copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
