Slowly re-reading The Sandman masterpieces. See it as my way of Countdown to Netflix' adaptation in 2022! I wasn't really planning to continue my re-read until January buuuut the behind the scenes clip from Sandman just made me so excited, emotional and proud. I had to pick up at least one volume again. So here we are!
Years after I've first read the volumes/novels, I have noticed things I easily shrugged off before. It's kind of nice to actually see this world in a more familiar light. Sure, nothing beats the first time I've encountered these characters and this world but the familiarity helps me find even the littlest details that mattered and that's satisfying.
I have to say it here. What I felt reading The Doll's House before, it's still there. Even more vibrant than I remember because it feels so close to nostalgia.

"If my dream was true, then everything we know, everything we think we know is a lie. It means the world's about as solid and as reliable as a layer of scum on the top of a well of black water which goes down forever, and there are things in the depths that I don't even want to think about. It means that we're just dolls. We don't have a clue what's really going down. we just kid ourselves that we're in control of our lives while a paper's thickness await things would drive us mad if we thought about them for too long play with us, and move us around from room to room, and put us away at night when they're tired, bored."
I just want to point out that even if Gaiman isn't big on Romance, he somehow delivered the necessary feelings when he writes one. Destiny, Death, Despair and Desire are four of Dream's six siblings that appears on this novel, and each are interesting with their own right. Specially Desire. Definitely her/him/it.

Ooh, creepy. Very, very creepy. Which is why it’s taken me a month to read seven issues. But this does contain my favourite issue so far, “Men of Good Fortune”, the story of the immortal life of Hob. Absolutely brilliant.
I've read this, but apparently never shelved it, at least twice before. As ever, I find something new to love with each read. I'm not sure why people head into Sandman expecting superheroes or happy endings, but this - much like the previous collection - has neither (or both, depending on your viewpoint). It does, however, have beautiful symbolism, rich allegory, and the creative wealth of a great many talented artists and writers. The Sandman series remains my favourite graphic novel bar none, and I will go down recommending it to everyone I know.
This is a wild ride for sure. Follows the continuing adventures of Morpheus as he seeks to right his kingdom in the aftermath of his capture and long imprisonment. It's a hell of a story and I'm really enjoying it.

I started reading sandman because I loved the Netflix show, and the book doesn’t disappoint in the slightest, but I’m so glad to be “caught up” to the show now so I can let comparison go. Strangely given all of the excellent plot, my favorite part was the Hob Gadling interlude. I love the doses of pure fun in the middle of the drama.
