I liked this very much until the last 30 pages or so. And then it felt wildly rushed to me.
SpoilerGiven everything she'd been through, and everything she had told Aiden about just hours before, it was INSANE and unfair for him to propose marriage and then freak out at her reaction. And it was just utterly unbelievable that she'd change her mind in the hour or so it took him to clean up and leave.

Enjoyed the book and the characters, but I wish there was some effort put in to finesse that ending and make it believable. I do believe that Aiden and Julia could be happy together, I just don't believe the way it came together.

*shrug*

My my. Who knew I’d love the allure of dukes and marquesses so much? But I’m really glad I tried to give historical romances a try because I found so many gems among them. This book being one of them. Loved it.

This book really surprised me.

It’s more character driven than most historical romance books and there are definitely darker moments explored.

This is a good build-up of romantic tension between the romantic leads. Aidan Carr, Duke of Trathen being the upright, honorable man he is, is (quite naturally) angry with the heroine, Julia, for being used in her scheme to get her husband to divorce her. But you understand Julia’s desperation in getting a divorce, and why she did what she did.

This book has its fun, light hearted moments, but wow, did this book go into some troubling territory. The fact that Julia had to get caught having an affair and have her reputation utterly ruined in order to have her husband finally divorce her after 12 years is sad. I can’t think of many historical romance books that would explore this topic.

And can I just say, that it was nice to have a “mature” heroine, who isn’t a sheltered ingénue? It made for a nice change of pace.

Well, it was better than the last Loretta Chase novel, anyway.

Aiden and Julia were the only 2 characters from book 1 that I cared about and I'm so glad I decided to read their story in spite of DNFing book 1.
Julie has been running for so long that even though she has achieved her goal of divorce she doesn't know how to stay still and live an actual life anymore.
Aiden has been denying he has a crush on Julie since they were 17 years old, but she used him to bring about her divorce and he still wants her and he can't understand why he doesn't hate her.
Watching these 2 tease and chase each other was great and her learning to trust him after what her first husband put her through was sweet.

I couldn't tell you why I didn't love this. It had everything that should have made it fantastic, but in the end it just felt average. Not bad or anything, but not mind-blowing either. I may have to come back and think on this one.

I love these characters, they make me laugh and although Julie is someone whose personality I would normally dislike, Laura Lee Guhrke manages to write her in a way that makes her appealing.

The only downside to the novel would be the sheer abruptness of the 'Conflict' at the end, to think that Julie would flip flop on such a huge issue in her life in the space of 30 minutes seemed ridiculously optimistic. I was this close to downgrading to a three, but the other 95% of the novel swayed me upwards.
