The meat of the book felt like a well-rounded introduction to what it claims to be. If you haven’t read much about neuroscience and mental health before I’d say it could even be paradigm-shifting. As someone who has read and listened to content on some of these topics, I still found a good bit of insightful information.

The delivery was the major obstacle for me with this book. The title had me hoping for frankness, but her cussing and pop-culture lingo felt like a crutch, forcing relatability, to the detriment of the book content. I cuss rather liberally, but in this context it felt like incessant, even jarring, exclamation marks distracting me from the story. And the constant pop culture lingo elicited quite a few eye rolls. Moderation would have been great on both accounts.

Lastly, her attitude toward science gave me whiplash. On the one hand, she was really successful in communicating complex processes and highlighting how important understanding the bio-chemical mechanisms is to understanding ourselves. Awesome! On the other hand, she played into some age-old tropes about how scientists are not relatable, science is hard to understand, etc. (“okay fancy dr. lady”). As a scientist, and someone who really likes reading pop science on topics totally unrelated to my own science, it felt underhanded and totally unnecessary.

Overall, glad I read it, but I don’t think I’ll be picking up any of her other ‘Unfuck...’ books.

as mentioned in other reviews sadly the quality of the audio for the audiobook is awful, but the content was great and very informative. glad it came free with my audible subscription rather than me paying money for it lol

Millennial self help book trying SO hard to be different

Had a lot of good info and explained well but found the cursing to be a lot and unnecessary. I had to be in the right mood to listen to this. I get it, that’s how the book was supposed to be. I curse, I drop f-bombs, I’m not offended but sometimes found it excessive or that it could’ve been used better.

The audiobook quality was horrible, background noise and poor quality.

I can see this book might appeal to some people, but it really missed the mark for me. I got nothing out of this book.

Catchy title - poor content.

This had some interesting info, but overall was just ok.

People who cant handle the word fuck are the same people that cant talk about sex out loud and think pepper is spicy. Sorry not sorry.

To start with full disclosure here, I didn't pay for this book. I didn't actually physically read this book either.

I accessed the audiobook as one of the freebies on Audible, per the suggestion of a peer who stated that this would be an amazing motivational read for my workouts.

Yeah, she lied. (Sorry, friend!)

First of all, the audiobook quality was terrible. And, maybe that's not a fair point for a book review, but if you do happen to stumble upon this freebie, you should be prepared. The narrator sounds like she's talking at you -- loudly -- from a potato.

Second of all, the whole thing is just entirely too casual. Like, I don't know what I expect from a book called "Unfuck Your Brain" -- but this didn't feel like a PhD expert casually imparting great wisdoms to a modern audience. It came across like some random drunk chick from the club spouting off lines from her undergrad psych course mixed with a billion and a half F-bombs.

So, I did listen to this during my workouts. But, I didn't learn anything. There wasn't any great wisdom here. Basically, your thoughts impact your reactions and everything impacts your reality. Think differently, react differently, live differently. Nothing earth shattering.

It just made my workouts feel extra boring and extra long, which is crazy because this was an extremely short audiobook.

Since my peer recommended this book, I feel like there's an audience out there somewhere.

It's just not me.
