I loved this sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale! It was a quick and fascinating book to read. I really liked getting more insight into Atwood’s thoughts about Aunt Lydia’s story. I know that the story is quite a bit different than the way the Hulu show portrays the story, but it is just as gripping and exciting.

I really enjoyed returning to this universe. The prose is a little less poetic and keenly insightful than Handmaid. The “discovered manuscript” format was at times tiresome, and made it hard for me to immerse myself in the world. I wanted to love the main characters more than I did.

However, it was fun, the plot moved well, and the characters felt believable. I would have enjoyed it more, even, if it focused less on the children and more on Aunt Lydia’s machinations. Her character was the most interesting and dimensional.

I'm pretty sure I liked this book more than "The Handmaid's Tale".

I enjoyed the continuation of the world of Gilead, and to see some aspects of where it was going and how it happened. I also enjoyed having the story told by three different women who each have different experiences and stories to tell.

I did like learning the inner workings to how Gilead fell. I enjoyed the inner working of life in Gilead and the stories brought forth by Agnes. And seeing how the world was coping beyond the walls of Gilead gave the story a kind of honesty.

I did have some issues. Especially that ending. Why do we still get all of these non-answers to questions brewing for over 30 years?! I'm sure there is some significance to this plot point. It is still frustrating.

I would recommend this for people who have read "The Handmaid's Tale".

I need to disclaim that I barely remember reading handsmaids tale. But this was enjoyable!! Unique style of writing, pretty interesting and thought provoking especially as the US seems to become more extreme every day ... but anyway yes very good and I've been told i should watch the tv series now
