I enjoyed this book. I thought it had a nice balance of spiritual and emotional, both of which are needed. It was practical but not in a step by step approach. I do wish that he had spent more practical time on the emotional side of things. Other then a few case study stories where he mentioned therapy there was little mentioned other than don't mask the feelings and learn where they are coming from. It is a book that I need to put into practice in my own life.

This book wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great either. The content was helpful despite its disorganization. The presentation was lacking a narrative that connected with this reader. The anecdotes about what happened in a pastor’s life and his congregation come across exactly as such: anecdotes that are no doubt encouraging, but leave the reader asking “okay, so what now?”.

The last few chapters have some practical advice about how to organize our days. It is my opinion that the content fails to deliver on the title of pursuing emotional health. Perhaps I am not the target audience, as I am already okay with the idea that all our emotions are a welcome barometer for what is going on, and that our families have an impact on our emotions about our emotions. I could see how the ideas could be mind-bending for folks who see emotions as black & white as “good emotions” or “bad emotions”. (It me years ago)

Great book overall.

There's a lot of important stuff in here for emotional health in general, but the focus is toward spirituality as the book progresses. Add this to the list of books I think should be necessary to read before going into ministry.

One critique I have doesn't have to do with the purpose of the book but a mention of David's story near the beginning of the book — David's assault of Bathsheba was referred to as adultery. This always irritates me as it is not an accurate representation of what happened. Very minor in the grand scheme of the book, but I felt it was worth warning future readers.

MUST READ

This book speaks to the core of Christianity and every person who says they love Jesus needs to read this; it's convicting, helpful, and necessary. These chapters put so much into perspective.
We have so many uneducated, cold, and suppressed Christians and this book brings so much light to that, and reveals God's transforming power and love. I urge you to read this, it's 100% worth it.

I give 5 stars because I think this book challenged my thinking of family of origin and helped explain faults in family history. I really loved it for provoking new thinking.
