An interesting read, about a topic that has permeated most of western society. Hari is a very good writer and while the points he makes are captivating, they are his own that are based on his own understanding of the research done in the field. The studies he does reference are extremely interesting, albeit the points he tries to make from them come off as a little stretched.

If you read The Body Keeps The Score by Bessel Van der kolk and enjoyed it, this book would serve as good supplemental reading. It references a lot of the same studies and in my opinion, is a lot more straight-forward and easier to read version of that book.

Fantastic and important book. Not selling the one and only solution for depression and anxiety as many books but giving clear guidance on what might be a solution. Based on serious researches. Amazing book.

Enjoyed the research and the interviews which have been written about extensively in this book. Opened my eyes to a few things that I never really thought of before - especially depression and anxiety as a community-problem - that I think propelled me into thinking more about potential solutions to mental health which is often seen as an individual problem. Also a great piece for those who have been invested in their mental health for a while.

#145. Somewhat compelling, reluctantly.

Just. Wow. I hate being cliché, but I would love everyone in the world to even read the first chapter, and let them read the rest on their own. It's almost bad how much I strongly agreed with nearly everything in this book, blew me away in the most affirming way.

I didn't find anything much revolutionary in this book, in the sense that all the reasons for why people are depessed were known and logical to me. BUT nevertheless the author is covering this statments with a lot of research, experiments done, factual knowledge and so on, which made many things to settle better in my mind. If you are interested in the topic of mental health and human connection I would highly recommend this book!

The point is driven home with accessible length and I found myself slightly frustrated that the book needed to be this long when it could have been a long-form article in The New Yorker or The Atlantic. Nonetheless, it’s important and I ironically started reading this the week I started medication for anxiety myself, so read this and engage with your community, people. You’ll literally be happier for it.
