This book had a slow start but turned into a page-turner. It's an extremely heavy book about heavy subjects, specifically, the subject of war. I don't recommend it, but I do respect what the author wanted to say, and I agree the historical event deserves not to be forgotten or overlooked.
This book contains multiple and graphic depictions of decapitation, children dying of starvation, and women being gang raped. If I had read it in any other context I would've put it down. Since I am reading it as part of a book club with very old and intimate friends, I had the motivation to see it through to the end and look for the deep pictures and messages.

All the stars.
Adichie writes with deep empathy for a people and a place. I cried more than I would like to admit.

I loved this book. Even though this is not the type of book I usually read(I'm usually into fantasy) and I thought it would be a burden to read it - it's one of my literature books - I actually enjoyed it. I vouldn't stop asking myself what was going to happen, or what would the charactets do. It's the kind of book that makes you reflect on things such as war, and it was do beautifully written that at the end I was all "she can't do that!" Well, one of the best books I've read so far.
Why are all of the characters so hard to like? As I read on, some become more open and easier to relate to, but only as the story becomes more horrific and intense. I am glad that I read this and learned more about Nigeria and the Biafran war. But I am not sure I would recommend it or read it again.
