Was this top tier horror? Yes
Did this book emotionally scar me for life? Maybe
Will I read it again to see if there was anything I missed? Eventually

Oof. This is a HEAVY book with intensely graphic death scenes that is perfect for people who prefer their horror along the lines of gore vs suspense. The suspense is there, but the gore in the last few chapters greatly over shadows it.

PROS:
🩸 Nature VS Nurture
🦷 Is she really a psychopath or is she just what everyone made her?
🩸 Familial psychosis
🦷 The Gore
🩸 The Twelve Days of Christmas
🦷 Every murder has stuck in my mind like a stubborn stain I can’t remove
🩸 World and Character Building and Backstory are ALL solid

CONS:
🦷 The Nanny deserved better
🩸 Lots and lots of child death and reference to previous off the page child deaths
🦷 There is just a lot of death
🩸 Misogyny
🦷 Phrenology

I am going to be thinking about this book a lot. It is so unhinged, hilarious, grim and I had such a good time reading it. It is about Winifred Notty, a woman who becomes a governess for the insuffetable Pounds family. Besides being a governess, Winifred is also a huge freak. Spending time with the Pounds family, both the parents and the children, brings out Winifred's violent urges. After reading this and Mrs March, I will always be eager to read anything by Virginia Feito. :)

One sentence review: If “Eat The Rich” and “Good For Her” were turned into a novella.

Bonus sentence: I don’t know wtf I just read but whoa.

What the hell was that!!!!!!!! Holy smokes. Aside from an early mis-use of Fall over Autumn for 1880s England, this book was pretty much perfect for me. Victorian, gothic, gruesome, brutally feminist, and often, extremely funny. Killing Eve meets Charles Dickens, in this tale of revenge, class, family, and the violence men have on women, people experiencing poverty, entire cultures. Sometimes, wronged women should be allowed to commit murder, as a treat. This book isn’t for everyone, though. It’s extremely shocking and disturbing. I would find it hard to recommend. I’d at least recommend checking content warnings. But gosh, I loved it.

"Human expressions are like hides I've peeled throughout life, rolled into a ball, and slipped under my skin."

This one is crazed and bizarre! So much beautifully harrowing prose. So cinematic. Taking off points because the pacing felt off at times and some of it was a bit too abstract
(the time jump things etc)

Just…all the trigger warnings. But I liked the audiobook narrator.

A messed up fun read. Definitely incredibly dark and twisted, but the humor came at great moments.
