fin

Well, the first book was just fluffy in comparison with this one - the plot is very depressive! The author does her job well making the reader feel all the despair, atrocity and terror of the situation the main characters find themselves in, but it's not easy to read - you've got to love dystopia and tolerate the lack of positive events in the plot. It's not a relaxing and pleasant book, but definitely worth attention and four stars!

I loved Wither, the first book in the Chemical Garden Trilogy, was amazing. I could not put the book down. This one however was much harder for me to get through. I did not enjoy it as much and I do believethat DeStefano is a beautiful writer. This book, however, I did not begin to enjoy until Rhine and Gabriel got to New York (so almost halfway through the book). The ending was abrupt and I wanted there to be a little more. It was not exactly a cliff hanger ending which is why I think that I did not like it much. But I love the series and I cannot wait to see what happens next.

This was quite possibly worse than the first book. There are so many holes in the story that just don't make sense, and like a typical second book in a trilogy, it just contained filler nonsense that was completely irrelevant to the story itself. You could probably skip this book altogether and go straight to the third book and not miss a beat. a little over 3/4 of this book was just worthless filler dragging though the mud. Nothing important happened until the last 50 pages or so of the book.

From here on in there may be spoilers, so beware, and I apologize for my thoughts being so scattered. I lost a few brain cells with this one.

Gabriel. This boy has no personality whatsoever and I don't understand how Rhine, or anyone for that matter, could be attracted to him. all we know is he has blue eyes and his build is slightly bigger than Linden. Gabriel and Rhine have absolutely ZERO chemistry. If you're going to give us a romantic relationship or a botched love triangle, at least make the characters interesting
Rhine spends the entire book either sick or drugged. how can anyone call her a "strong and interesting" female lead? she's bland and all she does is whine about everything. The only interesting thing about her are her eyes, and even that is overplayed. she has heterochromia. It's not anything special or fantastic, it is essentially a genetic disorder and in no way WHATSOEVER be a key to curing a disease, which is what they are hinting at.

So this whole time, Rhine never knew she had a tracker in her leg? and with her having the tracker, why on earth did it take so long for Vaughn to find her?
and I don't know why this bothers me so much, but when Vaughn shows up, Rhine thinks "that limousine looked so familiar"
it's a damn LIMO. they all look the same. how is she going to recognize that one car as being his. it's just stupid

When Vaughn tells her that the reason she is sick is because she's having withdrawls from the mysterious drug-candies, I literally wanted to slam my head against my desk repeatedly. IT'S BEEN MONTHS SINCE SHE'S HAD ONE OF THOSE CANDIES. WHY IS SHE JUST NOW GETTING SICK FROM NOT HAVING THEM IN HER SYSTEM?!?!
So now in the end she's back where she started at. so what was the point of the whole book? a game of hide and seek?

and of course Selfish little Cecily knew that Vaughn had Rhine trapped in the basement experimenting on her, and doesn't tell Linden. then all of a sudden she wants to act all concerned wanting to get her to the hospital after she cuts herself open to get the tracker out.

and if they say that Linden loves her ONE MORE TIME. good god he still doesn't even know her, and he willingly sleeps with Cecily. yeah no he doesn't love her. that's just warped

she spends the entire book under the pretense of finding her brother.... she only makes an effort to look for him once. and then she doesn't even find him until the last two sentences of the book, and even then it's only on a tv screen. WTF

how anyone can say this storyline is exciting/intense is beyond me.

only reading the next book to see how this train wreck ends up

Fever wasn't as exciting as the first book, but it still managed to finish strong and leave me hanging.

Mild spoilers if you have not read Wither.

Fever picks up basically right after the first book ends, give or take a few days. My initial thought was that I wish there had been a longer time lapse. The whole circus situation that the book started out with was interesting, but in retrospect, a little random. I suppose it served a purpose later on in the book, and it was an intriguing place to imagine, but I'm not so bought by it. By the end of the book, I'd forgot that they'd even been there.

Gabriel and Rhine's relationship was very stiff and formal in this book, which I understand given the circumstances, but wasn't keen on. I feel like their arrangement was more professional than anything else, and I just wanted them to make out or something to liven it up. They were a lot sweeter in the first book.

Vaughn's creepiness was intense in this book, and very clever. Little plot twists having to do with him were welcome additions. I appreciated that there was a common goal in this book: to find Rowan. That whole journey was suspenseful and just when I was beginning to feel a tiny bit of skepticism BOOM plot twist.

The entire ending was amazing. I was turning the pages so fast that I had to go back and reread. The last 50-100 or so pages made up for the initial slowness of the book, and I was left in awe. As I write this review, I'm already about 92 pages into Sever.

If you liked the first book and are wondering if you should go on, I recommend it! Sever has already started out strong and will make up for any slowness from this book. If you loved Wither then you already know that you should read on!

I really loved the first book and I thought that it would be great, but alas. My hopes were crushed. It wasn't great and I didn't really feel that spark of excitement that I had when I read the first book.

I thought I'd be curious about what happens to the characters and the world enough to read it or at least skim it. But no

Ok so I both love and hate this book. There are so many twists in it at places it's hard to follow. Not only that but the twists fall short. I hope in Sever they are concluded better because if not I'll be very disappointed. Also this whole story was about Rhine getting home, and god don't even get me started on her personality in this one she is so wishy-washy, she can't seem to make decisions which completely contradicts her steely and strong character from the first book. In this book she just seemed to always be depressed and the damsel in distress. Also there were so many unimportant characters in this story. We met lots of new characters and then they just kind of disappear from the story. The twist with Rowan at the end was good and took me for a loop but another thing that bugged is that this whole book was about finding a brother we've never met as a character and then its a one paragraph thing at the very end of the book.

Also Rhine and Gabriel's relationship is so forced and just lacking. I couldn't tell that they actually loved each other. Their relationship just made me feel... for lack of a better word I'll use Erin's...indifferent. Even the kisses and touches are just forced into the story its disappointing. Also when Linden finally comes back into the story like the last 15 pages he just seems indifferent to Rhine now even though he's supposed to love her. I get that she left him but he'd feel something and it's not til she tells him the truth that he finally shows any emotions at all.

Done with the criticism on to what I liked. I love to hate Vaughn he makes the creepiest bad guy I've ever read about. He is so charming and good on the outside but so evil. He is truly evil incarnate. The scary thing is he truly is trying to use his penchant for evil to cure the virus. Also I love the premise behind the story. The story itself is original and unique and I've never read anything like it. I just think it is poorly executed though I will read Sever just to find out what happens. Also I thought the whole carnival of ....sins, flesh....was a great idea. That part was fascinating. I loved those characters especially the Madame and Lilac and Maddie. Also the twist at the end with her brother shocked me. Wait til you find out what has become of him.
