Decent story, but for it being billed as a "Ryder Creed" novel its not quite true. More like a "Maggie O'Dell/Ryder Creed" novel as Maggie got at the very least the same amount of book time as Ryder did. It was supposed to be a spin off novel, but was more like another Maggie O'Dell novel.
I felt like this had potential to be an epic crime novel considering the involvement of drug cartels and dirty politicians, but it wrapped up very (too?) neatly and easily.

This book started off with a lot of different plot points that didn’t seem connected at all. Ryder Creed is the main character, but most of the chapters at the beginning were in someone else’s POV, especially Maggie O’Dell. Because of this it didn’t really feel like Ryder was actually the main character. Since Maggie has her own series and Ryder was first introduced in that series, I felt like I was missing what I needed to know in order to fully understand the relationship between them. Because of that it made some scenes between them feel really strange in my opinion. It took a while, but eventually the different plot points came together. The conclusion seemed pretty sudden, but at least everything was connected, so it was satisfying.
While the plot wasn’t my favorite, I think the characters made this book a lot better. Amanda and Jason were my favorites, I think because they both needed help and had a lot of potential for growth. Ryder was also an interesting character, especially in how much he understands dogs. Speaking of which, I wish we got to see more of the dogs in this book! Of course they were involved a lot, but I loved them so much I wanted more!

Not bad. It felt like parts of the story was missing, but this was not a bad start to a series.
Kava isn't really doing it for me anymore. Let's go back to priests molesting and murdering kids
This is the type of book that you would generally read in an airport or traveling its doesn’t really tax your brain and if you lost it you would be crying over it. If this series was a TV show it would be wrapped up easily in 45 minutes. I liked the main character well enough as well as the K9 aspect of the series. Didn’t love the Maggie O’Dell character another tortured soul and star of her own series. I don’t know if she will be a regular in every book considering is seems as if the author is keying up a slow burn romance but I think the series would be better without it.
I decided to give this "spin off" series a look. Ryder Creed is a dog trainer who specializes in, well, training drugs for literally anything. Drug Dogs, Cadaver Dogs, War Dogs.....James Bond has impossibly convenient gadgets and Creed has a dog for every purpose it seems.
Maggie O'Dell is a part of this story. Of course, I found chapters with her involved the most compelling. This time the case involves cartels, drug lords, and human trafficking. Maggie and Creed get wrapped up in their own ways with a twisted cartel member who likes to torture victims with stinging bugs, and dumps their bodies in the river for the FBI to find to send a warning. But a warning to who?

Kava has a powerful series with FBI profiler Maggie O'Dell. This is the start of a new series which features a dog handler named Ryder, who has a lot of baggage in his past. He has created a state of the art training facility for dogs trained to find people, sniff out drugs, dead bodies and so forth. The only thing is the dogs are rescues, unwanteds and abandon mutts mostly, some have pedigrees. The people who help with the dogs are pretty much the same.
Hannah runs the place and buffers Ryder from the publicity that comes with his searches. This time he stumbles across the smuggling of humans instead of drugs. This is a target on his back and when he befriends a young woman at the airport, he becomes target to the drug cartel.
Enter Maggie who thinks her boss is sending on a wild goose chase to Alabama, to follow up on a dead body find in Potomac. Between what Ryder stumbled into and Maggie fighting her own bureau to uncover the truth, the paths intersect until her bosses come clean and she sees exactly what the picture is, its more than just human traffic and drug smuggling.
Well plan out and executed for a new character, which could be a spin off from the Maggie series, but not necessary to read this series. I have a couple issues with the ending, came on kinda fast and some actions seem a little rushed.
