The protagonist is unlikable. The story is captivating but not enough to keep subjecting myself to the “woe is me, I’m such a victim” first person narrative.

About the book
Ava is a Chinese-American stay at home mom, she used to be a lawyer. She’s struggling with life, her husband (a successful surgeon) is away from home often and she has a hard time taking care of her always crying son. When she meets her former college roommate Winnie her life takes a drastic turn. Winnie trades imported luxury replica bags for the real ones in stores and had made a fortune. She needs someone with an innocent look to help her import the handbags, which of course Ava would never get into. Until she’s in China with family and her husband blocked her credit cards and she’s left without money….
My thoughts about the book
What an original story! You think you know where it’s heading and halfway through the story suddenly changes, which makes it intriguing to read. It’s good that the book talks about the poor work conditions of the Chinese employees in the factories, something we have to be well aware of when buying cheap clothing…
