“I knew in that moment that Andie was seeing me—all of me—in a way I’d never felt seen before.”

4.5/5 ⭐️ “My Cone and Only” is officially one of my favorite reads of 2021!

I’ll be honest, the “brother’s best friend” trope is always either a hit or miss for me. More often than not, the storyline tends to be predictable and the drama always tends to play out the same way.

So I really loved that while Susannah hit a lot of those typical plot points that come with the “brother’s best friend” trope, she also brought a unique aspect to the book with Wyatt’s music storyline along with all of his family drama (and of course all the ice cream talk!)

Wyatt & Andie — I absolutely adored Wyatt! I truly didn’t think I would end up liking him in the beginning, but I was pleasantly surprised by him! His character had so much depth and I loved getting to see the softer and more vulnerable side that Andie seemed to bring out of him. Those two honestly just brought out the best in each other and their chemistry felt so natural and sweet that you couldn’t help but root for them! On the flip side, their physical chemistry was just as palpable and those steamy scenes were >>>

This book was tons of fun! This small town, brothers best friend romance was full of all sorts of feels; a sexy, swoony, romantic escape, and I couldn’t get enough.

Since the very beginning of the story I was hooked on Andie and Wyatt’s story, loving every second of this mutual pining that I so adore in romances. Their friendship and camaraderie were undeniable from the start. But soon enough we could see that so were their chemistry and feelings. More than counting on each other, they started to dream about each other, plan around each other, see a future with each other. I was addicted to their connection, their chemistry, their respect and love. It was impossible not to fall in love along with them.

This was a wonderfully sweet romance. Funny and emotional with the perfect level of steam. I loved it and AND I can’t wait to read Tanner and Lucy’s story next! This is for sure a book series I’m going to keep looking forward to all of its books.

The first in a new series about the King family, My Cone and Only is set in a small town and is grounded but doesn’t feel small. Susannah Nix’s first series, Chemistry Lessons, was mostly set in LA and featured scientists. The new series is set in a small town in Texas, home to a famous ice cream company (Blue Bell without the listeria), run by the patriarch of a family that’s been through a lot. Wyatt has shunned the family business, getting by as a handy man and playing in a small-time cover band. He’s known as a love him and leave him sort, but secretly pines after his best friend’s younger sister, Andie. Andie has had a crush on Wyatt for years, but he never seems to see her like that.
What I like most about the book is that although it’s set in a small town and has the brother’s best friend trope, it doesn’t feel dated. And the issues that each character is going through feel true to life. Yes, there’s a promise to never date his best friend’s little sister, but that’s not the obstacle nearly as much as Wyatt’s issues with dreaming of a different, more vulnerable life. The characters have an easy, believable chemistry.
Some of the scenes that Nix does best here are the going out in a small town, where you already know all the people you’re drinking with, but you still get dressed up anyways.
You first meet Wyatt and Andie in Mia’s book, the last one in the Chemistry Lessons series. I was wary about where I’d be enough interested in them, but in Nix’s capable hands, I needn’t have worried. And the glimpses of the other brothers leaves me interested in learning more about the King family (tightly wound Tanner is next).

The story
Andie is the sister of Wyatt’s best friend Josh. In their small town, Wyatt’s father is the patriarch of the ice cream dynasty, but Wyatt has rejected it all. He supports himself on taking handyman work and singing in his cover band. He’s been in love with Andie forever, hiding his feelings for her to not upset Josh. But when Andie needs his help to fix up her house, things really get going.

My thoughts
I loved how the author spun this small town, brother’s best friend, forbidden love story into a fresh and spicy read. I love how the dual POV gives Wyatt a chance to show off the vulnerability behind his suave and confident exterior, tackling the sadness and insecurity he keeps inside. I love how Andie’s family and friends support her. A sweet read!

It's Ok, tough the title made me think ice cream would be a bigger part of the story than it was.

"Friends to lovers" fans, you should check this one.

Andie and Wyatt have known each other since ever. They've always been secretly in love with each other, but never thought something could actually happen. The reason? His best friend (her brother). He made Wyatt swear that he would never touch his little sister. That gave her the impression that she wasn't good enough for him, that all the other girls were prettier and more interesting, so she kept her feelings hidden as well.

Many years have passed by and now they have the chance to spend some time alone, away from her brother. Can you guess what's gonna happen? lol.

It was a fun read. It's the first time I read a book by Susannah Nix and I definitely wanna read some more.

I only had a little trouble at times with their chemistry. Since they've always been close, I expected them to have more fluid conversations (deeper and silly ones as well). When a person has been in your life for this long, some things don't even need to be said. I felt like they were calculating their words, the dialogues didn't feel so natural considering their past. I wouldn't feel that way if they had just met, though. Still, it was a good romance and I really wanted to read their happy ending.

* My Cone and Only is book #1 in the King Family series. Each book is a standalone.

* I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
