I don’t think the pacing of this book is actually slow; it was just slow to me. Because it was boring.

Roughly half the book was just a cycle of Kirk being disillusioned with his desk job and wanting to return to active duty at all costs, without thinking of how his actions might affect others. Also, we gotta catalog how sexually attractive every woman is. It adds to the reading experience. Apparently.

Then at 46 percent, Spock bursts in from the desert in a cool and sexy way to save the ship(s): the ships being the Enterprise, his relationship with Kirk, and the metaphorical ship of the book’s plot. This wasn’t quite enough to make this book good, but he tried his best and that’s all we can really ask of him.

Weirdly sexual, and I don't necessarily mean Ilia; I could've done without reading about e.g. Spock getting a hard-on from seeing the Enterprise bridge again, or same thing for Kirk when seeing an old friend.

And I don't think Kirk actually called off the self-destruct in the end?

I love how Spock comes to understand the importance of his human/emotional side.

There were some questionable moments when Kirk was thinking about women but other than that a fun read

I think it was a very good work of science fiction, and a great companion piece to the movie. However there are some erotic scenes that come off as cringe, unnecessary, and out of place. Overall though I think it adds context the movie was lacking.

Some of the things in this book are really cool but then it's followed up with a vaguely sexist/misogynistic remark and I'm like what was that. I would like to believe Kirk wouldn't call someone a whore in his inner dialogue that feels pretty out of character. I got so mad at that dialogue I literally had to look up what episodes of TOS Gene Roddenberry wrote for and once I saw Mudd's women at the top of it everything made sense. While I disagree with minor characterizations this book was okay. It was still interesting to see inner dialogue of characters as with TV and film we can only imagine what they might be thinking. There was some interesting bits of new dialogue and explanations that I really enjoyed. Spocks entrance to the Enterprise will always be loved even in book form! Even though she's a minor character I like what he wrote for Dr. Christine Chapel. Dr. McCoy is always a delight.

If your a star Trek fan I would say you would enjoy this.
