This is the first Holly Black book that I have had zero problems with. I loved every second of it and was sucked into the world. I enjoyed how it entertained commentary on the economic class system our world has in place, it was interesting to see it played out in an urban fantasy.

This was so good, I enjoyed it a lot and almost didn't read it due to low ratings when it first came out. But I feel like a lot of people expected more of a Folk of the Air type story and this is not that. It's also not YA, and it's not a romance (seems to be another complaint, lack of romance) though it has some romance in it, that's not the main plot line.
I loved Charlie and Vince, and Posey grew on me a lot by the end. Can't wait for the second book!

I kept bouncing between whether this was a 3 star or 4 star book. The beginning was pretty rough, and the first 50 pages or so were a bit info-dumpy. From there it went through some parts that were interesting and kept me turning pages to other parts that were slow and/or cringeworthy. The last chunk of the book felt solid enough for me to settle on a 4 star rating, although I would probably rate it 3.5 if I could. The characters weren't very fleshed out, and some of the info that got dumped was irrelevant at the time and only came back later after I had forgotten it. Saving that info until later would have been more impactful. The author also kept describing people's outfits, which I personally hate in books, especially when it has no relevance to the story. It feels out of place and clunky and takes me out of the story. I don't know why the author decided to call the Book of Night, the book that is in the title, by three different names. That just struck me as odd. I have not read any of Holly Black's other books, so I have nothing to compare this writing to. But overall I think the story itself was compelling, and Vince's storyline kept me interested enough to want to find out how it ended. I'm not sure if I'll end up reading the second book, but I don't regret reading this one.

"Do you think the stars have shadows?" I guess if there's some brighter star."

This was surprisingly really good. This was our book clubs BOTM for January, I found it on a forum when I typed in "easy, fast paced fantasy reads. So, I didn't know much about this book and sort of went in completely blind. I am glad I did. It was great! It was amazing! I really, really loved it.

"She was a poisoned well of a girl."

The .25 has been taken off due to the book being quite predictable. Otherwise, fully 5 star read. other readers too. I don't know if this is just me, or if it has been the same However, I guess plot twists way before they come. This one, guessed on page 153, Chapter 18. I Everything else in the book, I also predicted. Don't get me wrong, it was great and such a fun read. I do wish that it wasn't as predictable as it was so I could just enjoy it that much more. (Though, guessing is part of the fun and I did get many other little things wrong.)

'Trauma is more than pain.'

Overall, I could relate a lot to Charlie and the emotions and feelings that she feels. From a young age into early adulthood. Her trauma was very relatable, and also her strength. I also annotated the heck out of this one. It really brought out so many feelings and so many thoughts. And there were also so many times I actually did laugh out loud. Going through my notes there are many "lol"s & "WHAT?!?!?!"s & also "Oh Sh!t"s. 'His desire was raw-edged, vulnerable. As though he'd shown her something true about himself for the first time. If you like magic, tarot cards, crystals, hoodoo voodoo, anda all that. Definitely read this book. It's way there for me as a witch anyway. I felt like I was actually reading about things that happen in our world. Not in a fictional realm. However, the more I think about the ending the more I need book two to hurry up. Please Holly, we are dying out here! I can't wait to meet up with the girlies in my book club and talk about how this really made me feel

I was so confused, not about the fact that I liked it just overall all the time while reading, for reason I had a hard time remembering the names of the characters?? So that didn’t help on the confusing on the world in general!
But really liked Charlie!
