Really torn on this one, because the basic plot was interesting, a princess in a tower escapes and goes on to rescue her sisters from their respective towers. However the execution and dialogue weren't exactly subtle, a few lines had me cringing. My biggest annoyance is when an author hits me over the head with an idea, to me it means A) they don't have much faith in the intelligence of their readers OR B) they don't have much faith in their ability as a writer.

The scene that I had the most trouble with was the mocking of female armor. For example, they make fun of Wonder Woman's outfit (which isn't armor) and then proceed to have the character where that costume for the majority of the remaining story. They also use Xena's armor as an example...isn't it so sexist that she has to wear a skirt!

Well okay, but what about Sonja, they give her silver bikini as another example. Let's check out her counterpart Conan...

Yeah...

Overall, the plot is great but the over the top faux feminism was grating.

Really empowers female character lots of fun

PrinceLess is about a spunky princess named Adrienne whom all her sisters, including herself, are locked in towers and guarded by fiersome dragons. Adrienne is tired of waiting for her prince, so she befriends her guardian dragon, Sparky, and sets off to set free her sisters. Along the way, she provokes her father, the king, becomes a rebel knight, befriends a half-dwarf girl smith with a drunken father, and is EPIC. YES. READ IT.

This series is great! Like a rated PG Rat Queens. Diverse ladies kicking butt and taking down fantasy tropes.

I love this graphic novel and the message it sends that princesses don't have to wait to be saved, they have the power to save themselves. Adrienne is a story young woman and I admire her drive to save her sisters from the traditional practice of being saved by a knight who slays the dragon. Belinda is a great sidekick for Adrienne and I think this book should be required reading for all little girls to show them that they are strong and capable to accomplish whatever they want to in life.

The absolute best comic series I've ever read (though to be fair I've only read a handful).

Looking forward to the next volume.
I love the "save yourself" theme and seeing girls working together to fight stereotypes and challenge the norm. I found "Princeless" to be genuine and funny with likable characters.

Interesting, if a bit heavy handed on the gender politics. Nice twist on standard 'princess' tale tropes.

reread: still a fun, wish fulfilment romp. Several cute background sight gags that I'd completely forgotten about/missed the first time.
adventurous funny lighthearted reflective fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: No

I overall enjoyed the book, but I found the messaging to be a bit heavy-handed. Seeing as it's a book for a younger audience, I'll take into consideration that it was possibly made that way because of that fact. I found it entertaining and it made me laugh (for good reasons!).

Smart, funny comic book series about a princess of color who thinks it's dumb she's supposed to get rescued from her tower by a prince, and instead befriends the dragon guarding her and takes off on a quest to rescue the other princesses from their towers. I got it to read to Zoe, and she adores it -- but let's be honest, it was more fun for me than for her. Great feminist storytelling for the whole family.
