This is actually a re-read - I've read this before but it's not coming up on Goodreads for whatever reason (maybe different edition.) Anyway, just as nice the second time around.

Cute. Princess subverts the patriarchal system and starts rescuing herself. I wish we told stories that didn't even bother to include the patriarchal system in the first place, though.

I loved this!

Really conflicted on this one. On the one hand, this is a really fun all-ages adventure with tremendously appealing characters that turns a lot of the tropes of the "princess in distress" genre on their heads.

So far so good. But, like the plucky blacksmith girl, Whitley hits us with a great big hammer, all, I AM TURNING THE CONVENTIONS OF THIS KIND OF STORY ON THEIR HEADS. So we get a 2 page lecture on how Red Sonja's bikini is impractical combat gear. This could work if it were funnier, but here it comes across as didactic and self-congratulatory.

Still, the parts that are just about the story and not telling you how this story is better than other stories are really good. I'll read more and hope for a lighter touch next time.

Fun and full of brilliant tropes.

As a little girl Princess Adrienne didn’t like fairy stories in which the fair princess is locked in a tower guarded by a dragon and rescued by a brave and handsome prince who slew the dragon to rescue her. Imagine how she feels now that she’s sixteen and locked in a tower guarded by a dragon and waiting to be rescued by a prince. So after finding a sword under her bed, she goes about liberating herself and her guardian, Sparky the dragon. She gets out of the tower, down to earth, practices her sword fighting skills, outfits herself with some armor, and then she and Sparky go off to save her sisters.

PrinceLess is an excellent all age adventure comic as well as pointed critique of traditional patriarchal gender roles in society and in the comics. Whitley has seasoned his tale with plenty of humor and Goodwin has supplied marvelous facial expressions for the characters.

Whip smart and wicked fun! Looking forward to continuing this adventure. #saveyourself

Delightful fun. This made me smile. Great take on the fantasy tropes. Must-read for anyone who likes fantasy, comics, snappy dialogue, bonus dragons. Good for younger readers, tweens and up.

This is one of those books I read and immediately started recommending to people. It's a smart and funny take on the self-rescuing princess scenario, with a good supporting cast that includes a sweet but dopey dragon. It'll be of special interest to anyone in need of more good material with non-white protagonists, and/or anyone trying to subvert some of the more toxic Disney princess tropes.

Both me and Miss 11 loved it. Immediately ordering the second volume.
