Sequel to The Legends of Thezmarr similar to The Court of Silver Flames vibe but milder.
Wren as Nesta and Torj as Cassian up to 80% with a big cliffhanger in the end.
It’s a good extention to the original series, and majority of characters appear as well such as Thea, Wilder, but mostly Kipp and Cal.
Looking forward to the next one

This was a great start of a sequel series to Legends of Thezmarr. I loved Wren's character growth throughout the book, as well as the tension between her and Torj. The spicy level was perfect imo. The ending where Torj severs their bond and breaks up with Wren was a bit predictable since this will probably be a four book series. I thought there was some hand waving near the end to explain how Torj survived that knife to the chest.

Really enjoyed this book! Didn't know going in there was a series before this book that covered a different set of characters in the same story. Would have been helpful to read that going in before starting this one.

Liked the alchemist academy aspect even more than the shield barer/warsword training in the first series. Obsessed with Wren and Tori but kind of annoyed with the miscommunication at the end with him not telling her WHY he broke their bond and can’t be together. Will I read the second one? Definitely

Iron and Embers is the first book in The Ashes of Thezmarr trilogy by Helen Scheuerer. It is an enemies to lovers, forced proximity, slow burn romantasy that will captivate you from the first page.
Wren Embervale is convinced that killing those responsible for the deaths of her best friends and sister is the best form of vengeance. Suffering from a bit of PTSD and terrified to let down her walls and get close to anyone she has lived a life of solitude for the last five years. When Wren is finally offered a place at the coveted Drevenor Alchemy Academy she’s forced out of seclusion. Will she be able to accept her past and move forward?
Iron and Embers picks up five years after the Shadow War and the conclusion of The Legends of Thezmarr series. I always enjoyed the glimpses of Wren and Torj’s relationship we glimmered from The Legends of Thezmarr so getting a series dedicated to the two of them is truly a treat. Wren is a fierce, bad-ass, alchemist who isn’t afraid to speak her mind and Torj is a fearless Warsword of the Realms who is only soft for her. The tension between Wren and Torj is palpable and makes the slow burn absolutely delicious. Filled with banter and both “f*ck it” and “who did this to you?” moments the romantasy lover is surely to love every second of this book. But, not only is banter, tension, and spice lovely– the story line is also *chefs kiss*. Action packed and full of twists and turns I did not see coming, this is a book you definitely don’t want to miss out on!
A love declaration in the second chapter? Noooo! Do you hear my dismay, Helen Scheuerer? We need yearning, tension — the slow burn!
To be fair, it was a retrospective moment, and Iron & Embers apparently isn’t the first book set in this world. So maybe the characters are already established? But then why isn’t that mentioned in the book description or on Goodreads? I’m so annoyed that I started with this one.
The writing didn’t help either — it’s very much tell, not show. And without the fun of watching the characters get to know (or hate) each other, there’s just… nothing really gripping me.
