super disappointed by how much I disliked this one after the first book was so good. especially since this one is lesbians! the main characters are one-dimensional caricatures with zero chemistry, the pacing is bizarre, the dialogue feels unnatural, plot holes are glossed over. the first book was rich and detailed and tender and this sequel frankly feels like lip service to sapphics to avoid being labeled “woman author who writes mlm smut.” didn’t finish
A ship mystery is always fun, and this was a really enjoyable followup to the first book. The stakes are still high even though this one is a little less serious in tone, at least in terms of the romance. I like the magic system in these books, which is very rule-constrained but at the same time doesn't hesitate to interrogate itself. I like how these books have distinct narratives with their own set of pov characters while staying fully intertwined with the overarching story, and I'm looking forward to what else is going to come up in the last one.

Another great book in this series, the continuation of the story around the Last Contract and the details that slowly fill in some of the gaps were lovely as well as more interesting characters. I really enjoyed the setting of the boat and how this made it feel contained but also slightly trapping for them in their search. The descriptions of characters, clothing and setting were compelling without being overwhelming.
I genuinely liked the dynamic between Maud and Violet both when they were together just the two of them and when in their group with Hawthorn and Ross. They were strong women with different life experiences but still felt suited to one another. All the characters in these books feel like there are layers to them which I enjoy. It was good to see more of Hawthorn and learn more about him and his reactions in this book.
There were some twists and turns in this book, some more expected than others which kept it intriguing throughout. Honestly, just a good book with magic and intrigue and a smidge of romance thrown in.

Possibly my fault because I went in hoping for something specific that was not actually what this book was doing, but none of the main elements (Magic! Murder! Shipboard romance!) landed for me. Also for the love of god, please stop saying frig in sex scenes.
I looked forward to being back in this world and was already a fan of Maud in the first one, loved her even more here. Old and new characters in this book are also fun, I’m loving Violet and lord Hawthorne is a gem. The story this time being on a ship and a mystery drew me in immediately. Freya does great at describing everything in detail, which really adds to the experience. While I was entertained throughout, I did feel like something was missing. There was a moment(s) where I thought this was just a bit too long but overall I enjoyed this and can’t wait to read the final book.

There are a few too many improbable twists in this heist on a boat book. I think of your characters ever have to say ‘that’s the sort of thing that happens in books’ or similar, you’ve pushed it too far. A thief stops to drink whiskey in a room he has robbed, a bird is given away, and then the recipient puts it into a lottery (rude!), and someone falls for the same trick twice. Some things are resolved incredibly quickly and others drag. A little bit off, most of the time.
