DID NOT FINISH: 36%

Was hitting a wall and read a plot summary. Glad I didn't finish because while it isn't bad, i wouldn't have enjoyed it that much.

Interesting premise. I knew Finn's secret before it was revealed. Liked his interactions with Petey. Wish there was a little more from Valentine.

My book club was divided on this one, but I really liked it. The writing was beautiful and unnerving, the tone was mysterious, and the characters were interesting. The thing that tripped us up at book club was how the genre seemed to change toward the end of the book. I decided to just go with it, and ended up liking the book, regardless of the genre-shift, but if you're not prepared for that, you may end up suddenly disappointed during the last few chapters.

The villain was totally creepy! The author wrote him well, and the audiobook narrator's performance of him was particularly well done. Very unsettling.

To me, this was a book about male and female and human interactions, and I loved how she wrote those nuanced messages into the plot line.

I'd recommend this one, but prepare yourself for the genre-bending that happens toward the end.

I loved absolutely everything about this book--the characters, the setting, the relationships, the magical realism, the folklore. I'm so happy.

Well-written magical realism. Nicely set up from the beginning, with just enough oddity and a slow enough build to carry the reader to the climax without being jarred loose from the story.

This book has a lot of stuff I appreciate in fiction - magic, mythology, unpredictability and romance that isn't based on appearances. Plus there are bees involved which I also liked given my new found appreciation for them (see my review of The Bees). Laura is unlikely to enjoy this though - it falls in the same magical realism genre as Ava Lavender.

I went into this not expecting much, but boy did it take me by surprise. Every moment interesting but also meaningful. Fun, but also important. The writing style made me feel like i was there, like i had seen it in a dream. Some parts were a bit confusing but thats easy to overlook. The small town life may be a bit exaggerated but only in the way things are exaggerated for every story, point being that it didnt stop me from suspending my disbelief. This book was unique and worth reading.
