And apparently, whenever Luca walked toward me, the world moved in slow-motion. He pushed the beanie out of his eyes with glacial speed. By the time he finally reached me, we had already dated, married, and sent our two daughters off to college tearfully.

Mother of Sappy romance!!!

This book is soooo sappy! But I'm here for it!! Keep them coming!!!

Update: Nope!!! Do not keep them coming!
This was so hard to read without rolling my eyes and cringing at every other sentence.

This novel was completely adorable. A Korean rom-com's fan's dream. I literally read all 317 pages in three and a half hours last night.

Desi Lee is a senior in high school and is amazing at nearly everything she does. Her one major setback - she cannot flirt worth a damn. When it comes to guys and romance, Desi is a straight up failure. Enter Luca. He's new, he's handsome, he's an artist, he's slightly mysterious. For the first time in her life, Desi feels what she thinks could be love. Embarrassingly for her, her sweatpants fall off the first time she and Luca meet. Desi spends the weekend trying to get over the embarrassment and begins watching Korean dramas with her beloved dad. It's then that Desi comes up with a plan: Heroines in Korean romantic-comedy dramas always get the guy. And they all follow the same cliches, tropes, and formulaic story. So, why can't Desi use those "K-Drama Rules" in real life to make sure Luca falls for her?

Desi's plan is a bit ridiculous, but fun and at times rather sweet. She even gets some classic k-drama tropes of her own: the caring single dad, the sweet and loyal friends, the mean girl, the possibly horrible mother-in-law (not Luca's stepmom, she's awesome), her love interest having daddy issues, and a bit of miscommunication.

This novel and its characters are adorable. It was a fast-paced, sweet, and fun read. I really hope hat Maurene Goo continues to use Korean dramas as a source of inspiration.

As excited as I was to read this book, by the end, I was mostly just feeling a bit uncomfortable.

I loved the Korean aspect, as we don't get to see many characters of Korean background in this genre, and the family dynamic was warm and perfect.

But. Three things I could not stand. Desi is introduced as this charmingly, effortlessly perfect - not just good at everything she chooses to do (to bolster her Stanford application), but she's The Best. She has freakish knowledge about everything, but also spouts it out randomly then is a little embarrassed and all "oh yeah, not everyone memorises medical textbooks".

That's not charming. That's super annoying. Honestly I was kind of on Violet's - her background nemesis - side here. Let's hear her story.

Second, we have a strong, determined female suddenly putting a lower priority on all of her millions of extra curriculars to chase a boy. Not the biggest sin, it happens, but what gets me is what she sacrifices towards the end of the book for him. She does learn about how she may have been placing importance on some things for the wrong reason, but that's not why she throws it away - it's for a boy.

The third was the main one, though: the amount of manipulation she uses to woo her crush. It starts off relatively sweet and harmless,
Spoilerbut as she says "sorry for putting your life in danger - three times", it quickly spirals into crazy, shitty territory. Her way of apologising for her manipulation was further manipulation. For which he, of course, forgives her relatively instantly.
Now, I haven't seen any K-dramas, so maybe this is just standard, but it's somewhat off putting.

(Also what's up with every character being weirdly averse to sweating? "Shush up, you!" Really?)

Overall, I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it but I wouldn't tell people not to read it. There are certainly some lovely aspects to it.

I was rooting for this book! Only to be disappointed yet again.
I found this book on a whim and I was hoping for the best since the last couple of YA books with Asian representation, but it fell so hard. I think the concept was cute and different from what I normally read. I liked the fun and cutesy side of it all, Desi reminded for the most part of my friends in high school.
However, it was way too much, and the fact that she never truly repents for certain actions was, out of lack of words, disgusting. I don't enjoy the things she did and the climax and resolution came way too quick like it was the last three chapters and the resolution specifically felt so forced.

four stars ∗ wow i think this is the cutest book i’ve read in awhile?¿ asdfhjkl i completely adored everything about this book. desi was such a fun and sweet protag, and i actually related to her quite a bit. i loved her relationship with wes and fiona, and the two of them reminded me of two of my own best friends so that was really cool! i also loved luca (ugh dreamy art boys ruin me) and his relationship with desi was just freaking adorable it made me sick. i definitely needed to read something light and cute and fluffy, and this book definitely delivered those to me!

OK SO I BASICALLY LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS BOOK EXCEPT FOR THE MAIN FEMALE CHARACTER AND "THE LIST". I was originally going to give this book a 3.5 stars but the main character was so aggravating and manipulative, I just don't like her at all and ruined my reading experience. Not just that, she was also given a very inconsistent personality and character, she's portrayed to be this really sweet and kind girl but she can also manipulate people she loves (just like manipulating Luca in a way she knows will result badly for him and their relationship) without second thoughts? Like how tf. The author dragged that ending with a more vexing moment that the resolution was just...eh. I was hoping for Luca to not forgive her and it would have been more realistic, like would you actually get together with someone who almost killed you 3 times? In that way maybe, Desi will actually learn how actions can severely affect something and being a manipulative douchecanoe to someone you love won't get you anywhere good. It was funny, entertaining, cute, the writing was good, but omg the main character was just UGH

i didn't like this as much as i thought i would... i mean, it was cute but i didn't really connect with desi and luca definitely wasn't as dreamy as i thought he would be. it still was a quick fun read!!! (even though it took me like 100 pages to really get into it)

ps. i really went ahead and called desi 'gia'....

Una lectura muy dulce... Dessi te sacará muchas risas

I mean... Desi is just insane. She puts her love interest's life in danger, on purpose, to reach her own desires. Honestly, two and a half stars is probably generous with that fact in mind, but there were a couple cute moments in the book, and I actually grew to like Luca. His personality was a bit all over the place at times but he could be really sweet.

It shouldn't have such a high rating on goodreads. It's definitely not the heart-swooning romance I was hoping for. Is it the worst book ever? No. I've definitely read worse books (you know who you are), but I don't think I'd recommend this to anyone unless it was so we could rant about it together.

Two and a calf cows

Nunca en la vida he visto un drama koreano... pero me entraron ganas leyendo esto.
