Desi a a perfect daughter and student. She’s going to be a doctor some day. She’s popular and she has a close knit group of friends. But she’s never had a boyfriend and she’s convinced it’s because of her awkwardness around boys.

She’s really close with her dad and she teases him about his love for K Dramas. They’re mini series, of many different themes, but the end result is always a happily ever after.

After Desi meets the new boy at school and develops an immediate crush...something awkward and embarrassing happens.

When she watches her dad’s K Drama with him later, she realizes that it an embarrassing moment might be a meet cute in disguise.
Her scientific brain starts to see a pattern on the shows. She decides that if she follows a certain series of steps laid out in the K Dramas that she might make her crush fall for her.

She doesn’t see any harm in it. She’s not pretending to be someone else. But certain steps on her list are definitely a bad idea...one leads her to cause a minor car accident...oops!

She legitimately doesn’t seem to see the harm in her plan. She doesn’t think she’s being deceptive, she sees herself approaching an unknown situation in a scientific way, a way that makes sense to her.

Desi is definitely over the top at times but she’s a likable character. I liked her dad a lot too. I thought this was a light, enjoyable story.

fun and cutesy read!

Whoo, boy! Funny, unique, and lovable.

Desi is great at almost everything: school, sports, cars, random knowledge except she's a disaster at love. So she devises a foolproof (are they ever?) plan to win over the new guy. The plan is to follow a list of K-drama tropes so that she can ensure a happy ending to rival all others.

Desi is hardly a unique character (what with her being an overachiever with bad luck in love) but her experiences and her romantic failure-to-launch moments were hilarious especially at the beginning. I liked that the story was simple but also majorly packed with sweet moments between the main character and her crush. I also loved the way Maurene Goo portrayed her relationship with her father, not to mention not over-simplifying the depiction of family dynamics and loss for the MC the rest of the characters. Speaking of whom, the other characters were quite the ensemble with their backgrounds explained well. I feel like you got to know them properly at the individual level and how they fit into Desi's life.

So read this if you like a good young adult love story where the MC is a little nerdy and a little awkward, but aren't well?

3,5 stars. It felt a bit forced at times and it wasn't as cute as I wanted it to be. But it's a nice contemporary.

Plot or Character Driven: Plot
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: No
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

I truly don’t know how I was supposed to root for these characters to fall in love. The main character continuously puts the love interest’s life in danger through the schemes she sets up.
At the end, the don’t even talk through why he was upset about what she did to him and he didn’t even seem upset that she put him in danger so many times. Also the fact that she faked a drowning and put him in danger again as a way of apologizing to him shows that she didn’t even learn anything about why what she did was wrong.
I am a fan of K dramas and so I understand and recognize these over-the-top shenanigans but these tropes were done to the extreme in this novel that ended up making me dislike the main character rather than root for her.

*3.5 Cute, but Desi did not deserve forgiveness that easily

This was just lovely and sweet and funny--reading it gave me the nicest warm fuzzy feeling inside.
