An abomination by any standard. A giant leap backward for feminism, female agency, and general common sense.
Cliches - check.
Inconsistent character motivations - check.
Poor dialogue - check.
Poor editing - check.
Avoid.
(I would give it a no star but that's not possible and there's no way in hell I am giving it a one.)

“And he loved you and your mom, so much. I’ll always remind you of that, but I wish you could have met him.” -Brandon
UGH! NO.
When I first read this book I didn't think I was going to like it only because the beginning started feeling as if I was reading a wattpad book. When the first party started that's when I started liking this book. It was going at a great pace I loved what was happening until I reached around 50%. It was just ugh. Everything that happened beyond that made me want to cringe.
It was literally just about months and everyone in this book suddenly matured to adults. I didn't like it after the big part that broke me. I am only keeping this at 3 stars instead of 2 or 1 because I loved Chase. TEAM CHASE!
When I first started reading this I was thinking to myself how could anyone be better than Chase? Then we met Brandon and I started liking him too but I always wanted her to be with Chase.
How could you just throw out a main character like that MOLLY!!
Not impressed with this. Everything that happened after 50% was just so unreal. Everything seemed realistic until that happened and everything was just bleh. I get the purpose of this is to give people second chances but seriously? This was annoying.
And there's a book with Chase's POV? I don't think my heart can take that...
This is my first review so please bear with me here!
I thought this book was good, but it went on entirely too long after Chase died. Yeah, the love triangle was GREAT, but she should have wound up with Chase. Once he died, she went back to the other one and the book should have ended. The end. Except it wasn't. It went on. And on. And on. And on. And don't get me wrong, it was good! It was just entirely too much.
And the other thing I noticed that kind of peeved me was that everyone was perfect. Everyone was gorgeous, and handsome, and perfect, and rich, and they had the perfect lifestyle, and they didn't have to work or wonder how they were going to put themselves through school or worry about how they were going to support a baby. And then when Liam was born he was the perfect baby too. There was no worry about a potential birth defect, like a heart murmur or a cleft palate. There was no colic. There wasn't even a hint of spit-up! Everything was PERFECT. I hate to break it to you Molly, but life isn't perfect. Give me something real. Give me someone ugly. Give me a cranky baby. Give me someone that curses or smokes or drinks until they puke. SOMETHING. ANYTHING.
All in all, first half of the book, great. Last 200 pages, kinda boring. That's why it only gets 3 stars.

This book was absolutely amazing. I kept wanting to read more and more evey time I would put it down. To drama, to steamy romance, and tragedy. This book will keep you drawn in. I highly recommend this book if you're looking for a good read.
I loved this book. I couldn't help but feel for Harper because she was basically sheltered her whole life and had no teenage experience. It gives a good look into what happens when you throw a sheltered person into the college world and what could happen. It was realistic. I do not like love triangles and was surprised I liked this book as much as I did because I loved Brandon and chase all the same.
Spoilers! Do not read if you don't want to know!!!!!!!
SPOILERS!
I could have gone without the whole carter storyline and how he basically followed her to California to be with her.
Also I can't believe chase died! I just can't grasp on how he was killed. I wish we could have read his point of view up to when he does because it just happened In a snap and it broke my heart. Ugh I still can't get over it!
I'm going to read her other book From Ashes. Hopefully she won't kill off one of the good guys because I don't know if I can handle it!

Giving Taking Chances 3 stars, but it's closer to 2.5 stars for me. I was definitely hooked on the story and driven to find out how it would end, but I found it to be VERY unrealistic, even for a New Adult romance. That being said, I do still want to check out From Ashes and a few other Molly McAdams books.
This book has sat on my Kindle for a while, just waiting to be read. It was pushed further and further down the TBR list by other books that either needed to be read for review or were more obviously at the front of my mind for reading. It was until a friend of mine read that book and raved about it that I finally remembered it was on my Kindle and maybe I should move it to the front of the line. Now that I'm a week removed from reading it, I still feel as if I might just want to chuck my Kindle across the room when thinking about it.
The story is about eighteen year old Harper, who journeys to San Diego State University and discovers much more freedom than she ever experienced while leaving with her Marine father at Camp LeJeune. She quickly bounds with her college roommate, Brea, and enter the college party scene courtesy of Brea's brother Chase. We follow Harper as she navigates college life, including her relationships with Chase and her boyfriend, Brandon. It's about living life and taking chances, but also dealing with the consequences when things don't go exactly as planned.
I had a really hard time with Harper. Granted, she is an extremely sheltered eighteen year old, who's life existed around the marines her father trained. But I would have have thought that living around those young men, even if they were fearful of her father, would have made her a bit more worldly. Instead, when Harper gets to SDSU, she's completely out of her element and doesn't know how to fit into social situations. So it was a little strange that her relationship with Brandon started so quickly. But even more bizarre was the fact that she was so "in love" with Brandon, yet had all these feelings for Chase. Both guys were hot and any girl/woman would have been ecstatic to have either of them fighting over her, but it just seemed a little strange for a girl who had never had a boyfriend to now find herself stuck in this love triangle of her own making.
In my opinion, she truly did string both Chase and Brandon along. She loved Brandon and she just knew he was "the one", yet she wasn't willing to let go of Chase no matter what he said or did to push her away. It made me sad to think that both of these guys, who were so emotionally invested in this girl, had to be torn apart because she couldn't really follow through with what she knew in her heart she wanted.
And then the guys. Brandon was a big, tough, fighter, who was putty in Harper's hands. He loved her from the moment he laid eyes on her and would do anything for her. He was understanding when it came to her virginity and made an effort to ensure she didn't feel like he was pushing her towards having sex. He was a forever kind of guy and he made sure Harper knew he wanted her forever. Then there was Chase. He may have come off as a complete ass, but Chase was a very emotional guy when it came to Harper. He wore his heart on his sleeve and at his worse, acted like an elementary aged boy pulling the pig tails of the girl he liked. No matter how mean he was to Harper, you could tell how it devastated him and how much he wanted her. But it came to a point where I got tired of Brandon being a doormat for Harper to walk all over and Chase always being their for her when he knew she didn't feel the same way about him. It made me said for both of the guys and wanted them to find someone better.
Now the Kindle throwing part of the story comes about halfway through and it truly quite devastating. Not because of what that means for Harper, but because of what that meant for the character. After this, I really didn't care what happened to Harper and just wanted to the story to be over. Harper could whine, cry or carry on about whatever she wanted, but I was done.
There are a ton of readers out there that adore this book and Harper's journey to find her happily ever after. But for me, the events at the 50% mark took the air out of my reading sail. From that point forward, I didn't really care about any of the characters. Which is too bad, because it was a well written read. To Molly McAdams' credit, it's a nod to her as a writer to be able to evoke such an emotional response. She may not have been looking for my reaction, but it's a testament to her writing that I'm still mad over what happened a week later.

I really wanted to like this book, but I just hate love triangles. Especially this one. There were so many cliches and unnecessary elements to this story.
It was a cute book! It was pretty cheesy at parts, but I wanted to know what happened to the characters. Would likely read other books by this author!
