Our Hideous Progeny

C.E. McGill

4.04 AVERAGE

I really liked Maisie and the depiction of chronic illness, how it’s a sometimes thing that many people don’t understand. And her slow-going friendship turned romance with Mary, although I wish there had been so much more of the romance aspect.

The pacing gets sooo slow in the middle of the book. It’s all science experiments (recounted instead of told in a fun way) and conference discussions and misogyny. And for being a Frankenstein story, the creature itself hardly gets the focus it should! Enjoyed Mary bonding with it but I wanted more: what is its danger, Mary’s responsibility to it, etc.

The confrontation at the end is murderous and fun (finally some good action) and love the happy ending for Mary & Maisie. Overall a good book, but I just feel that it could’ve gone so much deeper.

I loved the concept, and the implication of this being Nessie’s origin story

Loved. Period piece AND monsters. Sign me up. Also best closing line in any book, ever, in history. ❤️

I really enjoyed the writing. McGill is talented and the fact they wrote this at age 22/23 is amazing. I hope to see more of their books in the future. For me the dull parts were the science. I’m not interested in dinosaurs and fossils, but I can appreciate their research and work they put into the story line. There were many moments where I thought, should I even finish this? It was slow moving throughout. I wanted more about the construction of the creature.

I’m very happy with the ending.
