2.5 stars. I've read two works by Truman Capote previously but it was a long time ago and I might need to reread them to know how I feel about them now. But at the moment me and Truman isn't really going a long. I just can't get emersed in his stories or enjoy his writing. Don't think this author is for me.

Capote’s coming of age story in the American south. Presumably the tomboy character is author’s answer to H. Lee’s Dill
medium-paced

Truman Capote has a way of writing NYC and the American South with equal romance (this book is set in the latter). I’d never want to live there, but reading about Joel’s experience sure do make me want to visit for a few weeks.

A friend whose opinion I value recommended 'Other Voices, Other Rooms.' It didn't speak to me at all.

That's the second time that's happened in the last month. Maybe it's me. Regardless, I couldn't get a grip on 'Other Voices, Other Rooms.' Capote's prose style didn't speak to me, I didn't care about his characters, and the whole thing felt self-consciously literary. It was as if Capote was more interested in his own internal exploration than weaving a compelling tale for his audience. Then again, perhaps his intended audience is people who enjoy internal exploration. As a general rule, I don't find that kind of thing particularly interesting. "Witness me," Capote seems to be shouting. Perhaps I'd have been more interested if he'd spray painted his face with chrome beforehand.

Recommended for, I dunno, someone other than me.
