Possibly one of my favourite book that I have read/ will read for this year because holy fuck. Read it right after Nat and it only took me more than a year to read it after @tsanmii recommended it hahaha (but so so grateful you did)
The pacing was slow but the buildup, tension, characters, and how these places and people are all interconnected was absolutely genius. And despite all the different character POVs that seemed entirely irrelevant to the plot and the 2 decade span there was no sludgy (??) parts as in there was no problem with me putting the book down and taking a break but i also wanted to continue reading
The reason I love it so much in comparison to Western crime books like Slaughter's and etc was how well the all the characters and the plot was developed as well as the slow pace and zero action. And i just loved the vibe of the whole book. There was something just really wrong, really sinister and unsettling yet, especially towards the end when we learn the truth about Yukiho and Ryo, something also very tragic. It was just a book that revealed the brutality of human nature probably also more
Also I can't tell whether Ryo and Yukiho's POV was never explored was genius or a let down (probably the former). The only character i thought was kind of irrelevant was her tutor
um there was probably more things i wanted to write in this review but im just going to let this one sit and digest in my mind for a while. you guys can probably tell i loved this one

Probably one of the best books I've read, especially by a Japanese author... The whole book goes from person to person yet reveals nothing until the end, even then nothing is really revealed. Amazing!

This dragged on and on for me. I usually enjoy darker heavier mysteries like The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo, A Secret History, In the Woods, etc. This book was boring. The main characters are robotic psychopaths with no glimpses of redeeming qualities so you don't feel a connection to them. The detective doesn't reappear under the last 100 pages, so you can't really connect to him and enjoy the hunt. Without any characters to connect with I felt disengaged the whole 539 pages. Lots of shock scenes involving violence against women but no payoff. There aren't really any twists. You know from the beginning who the villains are and guess pretty quickly why they did it.
