I’ve read many other readers reviews.
However I loved this book. I do agree with most… this book had so much potential! It was very short. Too short in my opinion. I really loved the characters and want so much more. Not sure if the author plans to write more but I would love to read more about this world ! Perhaps following Ryder?

Great idea but poor execution. Things tended to just fall into place without reason. It was a meh read.
adventurous
medium-paced
Mediocre narration, confusing narrative, lack of world building... luckily this book was short I guess. The pacing was a travesty - Etta fell in love over like 9 minutes and the battle was even shorter, and yet somehow the denouement was 1000 years long! Give it a pass, especially if someone trying to convey an entire history’s worth of meaning into the word “father” will drive you as crazy as it did me.
Sifters. Minders. Ghosts. Shadows. Hunters. Hollows. I really enjoyed this book. I LOVED the idea behind it. Memories being used as currency, bribery, ammunition and more... what a scary thought. I like that for the most part it has a good flow and it was easy to follow. I hit a few plot twists and couldn’t put it down! The twists were well done and didn’t leave me confused or over saturate the story with useless filler.
The only thing I didn’t like was the anti climactic ending. I liked HOW it ended but I felt the way we got there was rushed.
I received this book from @netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
I can honestly say that I can’t even begin to imagine having to use my memories and experiences as currency. Or have someone use a bad memory to hurt me mentally or emotionally. This to me is worse than physical pain.

For half of the book I thought this book was really boring and maybe confusing. The second half was a lot better but it doesn't help push the boringness of the first half up.
Once I heard the concept of The Memory Thief, I immediately pre-ordered it. In this world, memories are currency. The citizens trade them (or sometimes take them) for goods, services, rank, and experiences. The Gifted individuals are the ones capable of taking, moving, and manipulating memories. Not everyone is “gifted” and even those who are posses different skills. The main character, Etta Lark, has a powerful gift, but she tries to remain hidden amongst the masses as she copes with painful memories and the guilt that accompany them. But when her past catches up with her, she must confront her demons in order to save not only her beloved mother, but also her city and the rest of the realms.
It took me a bit to get into this book. I don’t even think it was because of the writing or the story (I enjoyed both), but because this concept of memories being something that can be traded or stolen is such a complex one that it took me a while to get used to this world. Once I did get used to it, I busted through the second half/two thirds of the book pretty easily. It does have some of those typical YA traits that I’ve seen people complaining about....pacing is a lil funky, the love connection is instant, the main character is maybe a little inconsistent in some aspects, but none of these were deal breakers for me. I really loved the world that was created here and the characters within it! I thought the story was unique, the surprises were excellent, and the ending was satisfying. I can see myself reading it again and hope for a sequel in the future!

This one was a quick read. I’m going to be honest— I had high hopes for this one but was a little over halfway through before I had any idea what was going on. And even then, it felt like it needed about 300 more pages to really fill out the world and character building. I was really disappointed. The writing wasn’t bad… but the concept really could have been executed well by someone else. Or, like I said, about 300 more pages. I didn’t even really like the characters that much. It was very meh unfortunately. ⭐️⭐️ #currentlyreading #amreading
I was surprised when I saw the amount of negative reviews for this book. Although I do know what they mean, I usually look for the characters in books and those characters are the base of my ratings. And I loved these characters o loved the journeys they went through, while this won’t be my favourite book it will still be one that I am glad to have read.
