To me, reading a book like this is much better than students simply doing "research" on different countries. Personalizing it with real children (and the revelation of seeing their photographs at the end) makes it much more memorable. There is the necessary disclaimer, though, that these children are not representative of all in their country. (That is true most of the time, anyway).

One of the first things students might ask: why do many of the children have a name that is different from what they are called? I also wondered why so many of them have dinner so late at night.

I would like to have had even more comparisons, and even more background into how LaMothe ending up using these families in particular.

This is another good choice in the Just like me thread showing how alike all children are. The illustrations are lovely and are nicely complimented with pictures of the children and their families in the back. Very well done.

I read this to my son first a couple of years ago and we found it interesting. This time, as a companion to our country studies, it was even more enjoyable as we were able to make connections to other things we have learned about. The most interesting part to me is always the supper time and the serving of caffeinated beverages to children. I wouldn't serve coffee or tea to my child in the evening and I wouldn't (at least not outside of an isolated incident) serve my child supper at nine or ten o'clock at night. But, this is normal for some children in some parts of the world. It shows how different cultural and family norms can be. I also wouldn't ever serve fish for breakfast, something that is totally normal for millions of children around the world. We love the photos at the back of the book of the actual children and their families, I just wish there were more photos.

One of my favourite books of the year, I loved the look into different families all over the world. And this is me as an adult, as a small one I would have eaten this with a SPOON. I hope this kicks off a series.

I have spent years recommending What the World Eats and Material World to families for their irresistible peek into the everyday lives of families around the world. This spectacular picture book offers the same engrossing level of detail, but with an illustrator's eye. So good. Put one in every classroom.

GIANT IRRESISTIBLE BONUS: photographs of all of the REAL families profiled in the book at the back. Seeing is believing.
