A book that celebrates our differences and shares our similarities!

I appreciate what this book sets out to do, and I think it is mostly successful. The one issue I have is that every child included has a mom and a dad and the whole family sits down to dinner. I get that it's trying to show commonalities, and that is important, but what about ALL of the kids who don't have a mom and a dad at home, or who don't get to sit down with parents for dinner every night? I worry about what they will think about themselves/their families with no diversity represented in the family structure in any of the children chosen to be highlighted.

Love the illustrations-take your time to explore them to learn so many similarities and differences between cultures.

A great comparative look at the families, schools, and home lives of seven children from around the world. Based on real families, and includes their photographs at the end, as well as a glossary of potentially unfamiliar words.

There were several things that I appreciated about this book when I read it. It is based on real families and their pictures were included! The pages were fun to study and the text was fairly simple to follow and understand. Also, it provided a great glossary at the back for any words that would be new vocabulary words for kids. I think this is a great book to start comparing ways that our lives are both similar and different to the lives of families all over the world.

I haven't been tracking or reviewing the books that I've read for the kids' lit class that I'm in this semester because I think they would artificially inflate my reading stats for the year. But I wanted to highlight this one picture book for two reasons:

1. The author is a RISD graduate, and I wanted to represent some RI excellence.

2. I was totally engrossed in this book! The art is beautiful, the words are simple and straightforward with a glossary in the back to help with unfamiliar terms, and it does a wonderful job of showing how (real!) families around the world are both alike and different. This is a book I would love to gift to a child someday, hoping it will make them appreciative of different cultures.

My only criticism is that the families are all heteronormative in appearance. Some gender or sexuality diversity would be a great addition! The same goes with the appearance of bodies and abilities. I know it's challenging to include every type of person, but even incorporating a multi-generational home could have satisfied this need.

This is the type of book I would've loved as a kid. The only thing I didn't really like was that all family/parent structures were essentially the same! A fun book though.

I enjoyed reading about these 7 families from around the globe but was hoping for at least one non-traditional family. Also i suspect that these were all middle income families so we're only seeing one small snapshot here of someone's "typical" day.

November 2017 - Ben was interested in some of the information, but not all of it - maybe still a little young for it. I'm guessing early elementary would be the sweet spot - I could see a kid really poring over all the details. My only quibble is that it doesn't name each kid on each page - they speak in first person - and it would have been nice to have that reminder.
