Amazing, thrilling, heartbreaking story - all the more incredible because it's based on a true story. Just when you think there couldn't be any more gripping Holocaust-era fiction...

Read after watching the Hulu original show. Usually I like books better but I have to admit that both were good even though the show differs from the book. The book title is so fitting because they were certainly lucky to have survived such a horrible time. I am amazed by this strong family.

While presented as a fictionalized novel, there isn't much character development or storyline (other than "WWII is happening"). Reads like a series of rather disjointed episodes based on anecdotes from a number of people who lived through WWII-- which, turns out that's exactly what it is (the author heard relatives' stories during a family reunion, and decided someone should put them into a book).

While the stories are interesting insights into people's experiences, it would have been more engaging had the author placed those experiences within an actual story, filling in fictionalized parts or doing research to fill in details about what various situations may have been like.

Font size was minuscule. Beginning dragged, there were a lot of POV’s and characters to keep track of and even by the end I kind of forgot who was who: but overall I really liked the story. It made me tear up, and it was a lot more informative with the timeline than a lot of historical WWII fictions I have read.

I have read many, many books set during the events of World War II, many based on true stories like this one. This book, however, took me by surprise. While the events that the Kurc family endured were horrible, it is truly amazing to read a story of a family that, against all odds, found a way back to each other in the end. Though they are beat up, they are still whole, and able to share a joy-filled post-war life. What a beautiful story!
