Enh. It was ok.
Pros -- fast, easy read. Fun for the beach.
Cons -- insultingly predictably. At the beginning of the book a slave girl explains that she will be free when "the moon looses her daughter, if that happens in a week when two Mondays come together." In the very next chapter we learn that someone in the town in named Mr. Monday. Wow. I did not know how it would all come about, but I could already see that this book was not going to going to be very subtle (or very creative).
It's true ... the movie is better. (I should have listened!)

This book is so beautiful and everything I love about books. The combination of whimsy and fairytales mixed with human emotions and wants.
“He stared up at the stars: and it seemed to him then that they were dancers, stately and graceful, performing a dance almost infinite in its complexity. He imagined he could see the very faces of the stars; pale, they were, and smiling gently, as if they had spent so much time above the world, watching the scrambling and the joy and the pain of the people below them, that they could not help being amused every time another little human believed itself the center of its world, as each of us does.”
A Star and a half human, a man and a fairy, a fairy turned into a bird, witches looking for eternal youth, princes fighting for a crown, ghosts and unicorns. This isn't even the start of all the magic that is included in this tiny story.
I felt like Stardust was a mix of The Little Prince and Alice in Wonderland but something uniquely unlike those stories as it's in a league of its on. I now understand why Neil Gaiman is a favourite of so many his writing is amazing and my review will never be able to do it justice.
Thank you to everyone who recommended I start his books here, I feel in love with the world from the first chapter. The people of Wall, the fairy land, the creatures, the fate of the fallen star, all of it combined with a huge dose of beautiful writing makes Stardust just extraordinary.
“There is a proverbial saying chiefly concerned with warning against too closely calculating the numerical value of un-hatched chicks.”

Heart wrenching short love story. I love Neil Gaiman's writing. The story was magical and sad. Adventure and a love story.

Neil Gaiman never fails to create such magical worlds with unique characters and stories. I don’t usually like when authors write in different povs but I always look forward to a new one by him. As always, Gaiman’s simple prose is fantastic and so full of whimsy without being overdone. He has such a talent for creating fully realized worlds without jam packing the book with confusing information.
For once I actually really liked the main character. At first I found him bland but Gaiman did a great job showing how Tristran changed during his travels.
I liked reading a book by him that was very classic fairytale fantasy (unicorns, goblins, lords, witches) but it still had his unique flair for wacky characters.
My only critique with this book is that it did lack a true sense of danger. I was never on the edge of my seat worried about what was going to happen next. There were a lot of people after the star yet I was never worried that they’d get her. However it did make this book stress free which I can appreciate from time to time.
If you like fantasy than you have to read this book!
This book had so many great quotes! My favorite quote was:
“He wondered how it could have taken him so long to realize he cared for her, and he told her so, and she called him an idiot, and he declared that it was the finest thing that ever a man had been called.”

Overall a nice story. I like that it is an "adult fairytale." It took me a while to read because it's quite slow. The writing could be very nice at times.
This is a book that anyone who enjoys fantasy will probably like. But I definitely don't love it.

A classic hero’s journey that kept me reading to learn more about the interesting magical world it is set in. I didn’t feel particularly connected to any of the characters, which is not something I need to be able to enjoy a book, but I know that is important for some readers. I found the way that the narrative jumped between different people fun and engaging, and it felt very movie-like (no surprise that there is a movie adaptation).
In the spectrum of fantasy, one end being fairy tales and the other end being high fantasy, I feel this book sits in the middle of those two, maybe leaning a little more towards the fairy tale end of things.

This happens very rarely, but I actually prefer the movie over the book. I really enjoyed the characters and the plot, plus the pictures were fun. The movie shortened and expanded the story in just the right places and I found some characters had more depth. The movie also upped the charm, which I enjoyed. I liked the book but I love the movie!
