The Lies That Bind

Emily Giffin

3.47 AVERAGE

The first 40% of the book is covered in the summary so I felt like I already knew everything that was happening. There was one twist at the end that I didn't see coming. Super easy read and not total garbage. Still processing how I feel about the ending.

This book gets 2 stars for being so incredibly unrealistic but 5 for being so incredibly entertaining. So, I compromised at 3.5 and then rounded up to 4 because I love Emily Giffin (Btw, just now learning her last name is Giffin. I've been reading her books for YEARS and have been saying "Emily Griffin" this whole time.)

Anyway, let's get to the point.

Cecily is at a crossroads in her life. She's not nearly as successful as she would like to be, and she's chronically single after breaking up with her long-term boyfriend Matthew. While she can't do much about her success in a moment's time, she can do a lot about her relationship status. But when she reaches for the phone to call Matthew up, she hears a voice telling her not to do it.

Cue Grant, A.K.A owner of the voice. Cecily and Grant hit it off immediately that night, and despite the undeniable barriers to their relationship, the two can't seem to say goodbye -- until they have no choice. On the morning of September 11, 2001, Grant disappears. Cecily searches for him, desperately, not knowing that his reappearance might leave her with more questions than answers.

If you like novels where each and every turn takes you by complete surprise, pick this one up. It's quite the ride.

I did not really like this book.
Here's why:
1) I don't like things set around 9/11. Sorry. I don't know who needs to hear this, but it's still too soon for most people. Stop it.
2) This feels like so many other books I've read about complicated love relationships. A lot like Ghosted by Rosie Walsh. I also think the whole Grant-faking-his-death-because-he's-a-criminal thing came out of nowhere.
3) Once Rachel/Ethan/Darcy were introduced, I spent the rest of the book trying to figure out where this fit into the Something Borrowed timeline.
I still contend that Something Borrowed is the best book Emily Giffin has ever written.

The pretzel twist aerobatics the author writes to create the plot of this book are Olympic worthy.

Cecily's finds out the guy she was seeing for a while is married? Great, wait a few chapters - turns out his wife was cheating on him first.

I understand morality is a complicated thing, but the amount of times some hand-waving happened to justify any bad behavior was excessive. The consequence has to weight at least somewhat equally on the scale with regards to the actions, and it never did that well in this book. Between the lies, faking a death, lying to his wife, along with the Ponzi-scheme situation .. I just couldn't.
Cecily befriending her boyfriend's wife in an effort to better understanding him? Her dating and eventually accepting a proposal from a guy you spent the first half of the book just tearing down .. doesn't work. Matt was town down just a bit too much, to really be a viable hero at that point.

I will not even begin to get into 9/11 being used as a plot device to drive this story. Nope.

(These are just my personal thoughts on the story, everyone is entitled to their own.)

By the end of this book, I wanted to throw my Kindle away. It was incredibly insensitive to the thousands who lost their lives on 9/11 and the families who never had closure. The only redeeming character was Matthew.

I cant believe i finished this book. It was such a boring and frustrating read. The main character was wishy washy and boring. It was riddled with plot holes and issues.

What a bizarro story.
